I was talking at work with a teacher and HV who i work with and the subject of BFing came up. They asked if i was still feeding and i said yes.
HV said "why you still doing it, shes one now, give her cows milk in a cup". I explained that I was happy to do it and all health guideline say till 2 years for best outcomes she replied "well thats only of the exstreme feeders" WTH, so BFing must be a sport
I was quite surprised as she is very pro BFing but guessing this doesnt extened past 1 year olds

Ah, but can you do it whilst jumping out of a helicopter? No, then it's not an extreme sport.

lisad123 · 20/11/2008 12:12

I can do it while talking, drinking tea and watching TV does that count

I can do it while answering the door to the meter reader. Always worth it for the look on their faces...

RedSparklersOnHerHead · 20/11/2008 12:18

i can do it whilst typing lefthandedly! lol
i actualyy got the bitty bitty comment yesterday off my mum
ds is only 6mths! but "he's big now, he should be on a bottle" i tried my best to laugh it off but inside i was so .

i fed ds1 til he was 15mths, and only stopped because i was made to feel like it wasn't "normal" (in my pre-mumsnet days!) I will be feeding ds2 til he is at least 2!

i'm an extreme feeder!

BabiesEverywhere · 20/11/2008 12:19

Muppet HV

Just for me, ask her why cow milk is better for your toddler than breastmilk and report back.

Second thoughts don't bother we can guess at the uninformed response we would get back.

From a tandem NAKing mummy

determination · 20/11/2008 12:44

Why not let her read this..
This might be a good enough reason!!

determination · 20/11/2008 12:49

or thisthis has made me think differently!

nickytwotimes · 20/11/2008 12:51

What an arse.
Has she never read the WHO guidelines?

RedSparklersOnHerHead · 20/11/2008 13:44

determination, I just read your second link, yes, all of it! And I have to say I am thinking of becomming vegan. Some of the stuff is shocking!

VictorianSqualor · 20/11/2008 14:01

eejit.
It's like the breastfeeding groups on facebook though.
They are all offended about people complaining about breastfeeding, then in the next breath comment on pictures saying 'this child is too old to be BFing'......
Well done for feeding for a year though! I'm absolutely shitting myself about DS2 biting me when he gets his top teeth, I stopped at 8/9 months with DS1 because he bit the crap out of me and he had ebm!

cupsoftea · 20/11/2008 14:04

lol lisa - what an idiot this hv is. Like the idea of being an extreme bfeeder - If anyone asks me anything when I'm bf when out & about I shall reply that I'm an extreme breastfeeder!!

TinkerBellesMum · 20/11/2008 14:13

VS, you're in the wrong groups then! The ones I use are all feeding toddlers and tandeming, just the way it's happened not specialist groups.

Do I need to say anything about the HV being an idiot? I think everyone else has said it already.

PuzzleRocks · 20/11/2008 14:17

Hmm, anyone that says I don't have to still breastfeed clearly hasn't met my daughter.

Oh, and she drinks cows milk from a cup too. They aren't mutually exclusive, dozy mare.

lisad123 · 20/11/2008 14:26

so now we are not extended breastfeeders, but EXTREME Breastfeeders LOL
I get the "bitty bitty" comment from one of the mums at the school.
I dont tend to feed her during the day, but sometimes when teething she pulls at my top during the day Jaz has 2 teeth and has bitten me twice but thats it.

InTheDollshouse · 20/11/2008 14:34

I'm constantly amazed that people have any opinion on other people breastfeeding. It's not like you're asking her to breastfeed your DD.

SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2008 20:50

I am still BF Callum at 14 months, I have had no bad comments, mums at the school say 'good for you' when I say I am still BF. He only feeds about 2-3 times a day now anyway.

determination · 20/11/2008 21:28

i bfed my dd1 for 25 months and i am still bfing dd2 who is 20 months and i will do until she decides otherwise..

I am now considering increasing my supply for the house hold's cereals - after reading that like!! Maybe to make some cheese and ice cream too
