If you were breastfeeding was your period regular once it returned?

When DS was born my period returned at 6 weeks and was regular from then on. I was feeding him very frequently - he was a 2 hour interval at the least baby round the clock for the first 6 months.

With DD (now 10 weeks) I had my first period at 4 weeks. It was definitely a period as lochia was all stopped by 2 weeks and was, well, like a period lol. Just realised I have not had anything since.

Is it possible that my period could return but then breastfeeding could interfere with ovulation delaying the next one? DD is exclusively breastfed and goes 2 - 3 hours in the day and up to 4 or 5 at night so if anything I would have expected to be more regular than with DS who should have technically kept my periods away with his regular feeding.

Have just had a slight panic!

thanks
xxxx

yeah I would double check you are not preggers agan to be honest - if there is any chance you could be! Could just be bf ing but given you have had one period and had periods before I think you best check!!!

MamaMaiasaura · 17/11/2008 20:31

ds is now 10 and half months and still no period here.

ShowOfHands · 17/11/2008 20:33

Do check you are not pg to be on the safe side.

When my periods came back at 4 months (despite 2hrly feedings day and night here too) they were all over the place. I did some research and found that it is extremely common. It is especially common to have one period and then not another one for months while you are still breastfeeding. The other thing was that my luteal phase was extremely short so while I was having periods, I wasn't fertile for months and months until my cycle settled down.

lol!

waitingtobloom · 17/11/2008 21:19

Seriously though...shouldnt be (have been using condoms) but have had heartburn last few days (which I only ever get when pregnant), been feeling sick, very tired, breasts sore...sure its my imagination and an impossibility and all symptoms can be attributed to breastfeeding a baby but...

Now..what am I going to call quadruplets...

ok please do test and put me out of my misery - I want to know now! xX

BouncingTurtle · 17/11/2008 21:27

My periods returned at 9 weeks, despite me exbf. They are still very irregular now, even though before I had ds I was as regualr as clockwork!

waitingtobloom · 17/11/2008 21:51

Thank you bouncingturtle - thats what I needed.

Girliefriend - I will do a test but am going to feel a bit embarrassed buying one with a little baby in a pram!

Wish I hadn't read this thread, have been relying on breastfeeding as contraceptive DD 4 1/2 months.

I have a leaflet from family planning that says bf is 92% effective as contraception if baby under 6 months and not given any forumla or solids didn't think periods could return so soon while breastfeeding!! have to buy some condoms me thinks...

It's as reliable as the pill as long as you aren't supplementing with anything (including EBM) feeding on demand and not using any artificial teats.

I had a period at 4 months (when she was ill) at 6 months (ill again) then roughly two months from then till early this year (about 18 months) when it was sort of monthly. I'm very fertile normally, we've gotten pregnant from only having sex on day 13. Each time we tried I got pregnant straight away. This time I didn't get pregnant till Tink was 21(ish) months and it was unexpected.
