Soy based milk for babies - ready made?

Ema76 · 16/11/2008 13:55

Does anyone know of a prepared soya based milk that is ready made. I have found 3 formulas but they are the powdered type - cow and gate, sma and heinz.
Really would be good to find a ready to use one.
Thank you for your help

I don't think anyone makes one.

tbh I have only heard BAD things baout off-the-shelf soya formulas.
your GP can prescribe you a soya formula if necessary.

i dont think they exist - i have never seen any anywhere before

couple of links about soya formula

here

from government website:

Only give soya infant formula to your baby if your GP or health visitor has advised you to. In almost all cases, breastfeeding or another type of formula will be a better choice. Soya infant formula was originally developed for babies who can't have infant formula based on cows' milk, for example because of a milk allergy. But there are now other types of formula that are more suitable for these babies ? ask your GP or health visitor for advice.

Occasionally, GPs or health visitors might recommend soya infant formula, for example if a baby can't or won't drink other types of formula, or if parents want a baby to eat a vegan diet and are not breastfeeding

is this after you have the baby? are you pregnant atm? have you ruled out breastfeeding? why are you thinking you will need a soya milk? (vegan?)

sorry for all the questions, just it helps to give an accurate answer.

with a first baby you usually get a midwife visitng for the first 10 days and then a health visitor after that for as long as necessary, although IME they are usually keen for you to go to them

Yes it is after I have the baby in march. we only have soya based produce and don't use cows milk or eat meat/fish so that is why we are looking into this.
ready made soy milk would be a godsend if it exists but if it doesn't suppose the powder is not that bad.

well you know, breast is even better :D

Ema76 · 16/11/2008 14:40

i can't so it has to be formula

If it has to be formula please don't use soy unless you need it for medical reasons. It carries more potential side effects than ordinary formula.

Ema, soya formula is not considered to be a good nutritional option for babies unless there is a definite medical diagnosis showing the baby is unable to tolerate regular cows milk formula. There are possible side effects of using soya formula which you would probably wish to avoid - see the link that thisisyesterday gave to the article in the midwives' journal. It's worth reading before deciding the powder is 'not that bad'.

If you do decide to use soya formula and you have your baby in hospital, you will prob need to take in your own as the maternity unit is very unlikely to have it available - but this is something you can check in advance.

If you do not breastfeed, have you thought about expressing breastmilk and giving your baby your breastmilk that way? Sorry if this is not going to be possible, but not everyone knows that this can be an option if 'direct' breastfeeding is not an option for whatever reason.

Hope this helps.
