post mastitis...

Posted about three weeks ago when I had raging mastitis and was really quite poorly. Thanks for the ideas and thoughts.

The infection (which I think was brewing for several weeks before the big shebang) has now completely gone, including the milk blister/nipple blockage that I suspect was the main cause of the problem. I have no lumpiness, pain and feeding has been maintained well.

Just wondering though whether anyone has experienced any slightly strange things after their infection cleared...? Firstly where the infection aas sited and my boob was v v swollen the breast is really very itchy and all the skin peeled (a la post sunburn) - such an attractive look, DH had never wanted me more ! The skin is still itchy, but I think this is probably where everything was swollen and inflamed. Could this be the simple explanation?

Also even though my boob feels fine, I can still see a shadow like bruising or a duskiness to the skin where the redness tracked all over it. It is like a bruise, and I guess like the itching this could just be where some internal damage occured, but it just doesn't seem to be going away. Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone who knows more about breasts let me know what they think...? Ta muchly!

Hi MPD,

Yes, i have had Mastitis 6 times (4x with dd1 and 2x with dd2) and on 2 occasions the skin peeled from the whole outer side of my infected breast - just like you described it. and i had the whole itching etc for weeks after. It must be the skin repairing itself after the horror it had.

The 2 times when the skin did peal off, i would have to say were the worst spouts i experienced. I can only imagine the skin pealed off due to the extremely high temperatures.

god i just read this and had the same thing - i didn't even connect the itchiness/peeling to mastitis but happened a week or so after terrible mastitis in the same breast.

I've had mastitis a few times, the last time being two weeks ago and my breast still feels very bruised and tender even though the infection has gone.

just curious - do you all tend to overproduce milk? i've had it several times now with both my sons and that always seems to be the culprit for me; ie, they can't keep up with my supply for one reason or another.

Mimsy2000 I would say that my most recent bout of mastitis was definately due to overproduction on my side. DS was just 6 weeks old and I had been on a trip to a farm with dd's peschool. Ds was very sleepy that day and I fed perhaps only once all day which didn't help, on the bus home I felt awful and went straight to the doctors for antibiotics. Ds is 22 weeks now and my supply has definately settled down, I hardly need breastpads anymore whereas before I was soaking through several pairs a day

Over production of milk is also the cause of mastitis for me, and also being a bit run down.

With dd1 i was very weak due to massive pph so the cause for me getting mastitis x4 was likely that i was really run down. Due to the mastitis in same breast 4x within 9 weeks my breast tissue (i believe) was so badly damaged that i stopped producing milk in that breast for a long time.

With dd2 the cause was DEFINATELY due to over producing. As i was taking Motherloves Special Blend Tincture to ensure i did not run into Supply issues like with dd1. But stupidly got mastitis 2x before realising it was due to over producing and immediately stopped taking tincture - then happily enjoyed bfing forever....! She is now 20months and still going strong.
