bottle feeding advice to try to minimise colic

my dd (nearly 10 weeks) still suffers from colic and last night didn't manage to settle until 3.30am, which was really hard! we are going to try colief for the first time and drop infacol, and are already on easy digest aptamil. we tried lactose free sma milk at advice of the hv, which was a disaster so went back to easy digest. we have used tommee tippee closer to nature, but i wonder whether to give Avent bottles a try? dd often makes a smacking noise on every third or so suck... anyone have any experience of colief or advice on bottles - we aren't hideously stressed about her colic as we are fairly used to it now, and bless her little heart she is delightful when she doesn't have wind going through her (although last night from 5pm to 3.30am was a little overdoing it!) - we just want to try to see if we can make it easier for her (and us!). thank you.

hi, normally colic disappears at around 3 months, so not long to go has your dd got the right size teats on the bottle? if the milk flow is too slow, it might make her take in more air when she sucks. aptamil is probably the best out of the lot if you are bottle feeding. you could also try giving her a little bit of tepid water and see if it helps. avent is normally quite good, but you could also try dr brown, though that is quite expensive. lastly, i was told that my ds, now 7, had colic until he was diagnosed at 6 months with heartburn (reflux) wich can have similar symptoms. it cleared up really quickly with infant gaviscon, so it's an option going back to a gp and insisting on a second opinion if it goes past 3 months.hope that helps

we are on the newborn slow flow anticolic - do you think we should try a different teat? will research dr brown - thank you and will bear the infant gaviscon advice in mind for later. thank you - and any teat advice gratefully received! we switched to avent bottles last night so fingers crossed!

avent teats come in different sizes. the size 2 for 2 months can be hard to find. boots normally stock the size 3, but it's worth asking. good luck!

thank you! we are on dr browns now - and i'll call the helpline on Monday to check which teats we should be on! thanks again!

Sorry me again! we started Colief thursday with i think some noticeable difference, and then Dr Brown's bottles on Friday night (day before yesterday). She has started to drink less milk at each feed (something that happened dramatically when we tried lactose free which was a disaster) - often 2 oz rather than 5oz although she has done the odd 4 oz - and I wondered if I should try a different teat - have messaged Dr Browns but does anyone have any experience of this? have spoken to colief who say that the product does not thicken the milk, although of course the Easy Digest formula is thicker anyway! ...!!

Hi. I used dr brown bottles, they were great. I used a bigger teat because ds would fall asleep halfway thru a feed and it took longer which told me he was working too hard to get milk and tiring himself out. I'd def try going up a flow at 10 weeks. Colic is horrible but does pass between 12 and 14 weeks so your nearly there.

katherine2008 · 16/11/2008 10:23

thank you for that - i'll try and find a stockist - or did you order online?

I ordered mine on-line from the toys r us site, but you can get them in store there or your larger boots stores too I think.
As there is a 2 day delivery thing, it makes it easier to order them than run risk of not fining them in high street.
Other brand of teats leak, I've tried that too.

Hi there, dd had HORRIFIC colic from 4pm until 4am most days, we tried everything to no avail until the doctor brown bottles arrived in the post (from amazon I think, although boots and asda stock them). We used these along with colief and I truly believe that these are the only things that stopped the colic (had previously tried everything including cranial osteopath, infacol etc. etc.). The day the Dr Brown bottles arrived in the post my dd slept through the night for the first time at 8 weeks and never had colic again. Am currently due with my second child and am starting him from day 1 on dr brown bottes.
