hi

have been told that i should give ds multivitamins as i'm bf and not ff and if he was on formula now he'd get the vitamins added in that.

is this right and if so what should i be giving him and why? don't think i'd like to give him these.

nicm, there is a live thread on this very issue

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/breast_and_bottle_feeding/644812-Vitamin-D-supplements

The issue really revolves round Vitamin D, but babies' vit supps are usually bundled with A, C and D together.

You certainly don't have to give them Read the thread and other info and see for yourself what you think.

Hi

Hopefully, someone who is pro bf and has read the research will come along. I have read this about vitamins, particularly because I am vegetarian and raising DD to be veggie at the moment. She is 2.8 and still breast feeding like mad. She certainly doesn't seem malnourished although we seem to be hitting a fussy phase with food! Also I did BLW and she ended up having milk as her main diet until she was just over 1. I am now thinking about a vitamin drink for her if we don't get back on track with vegetables soon.

However, my approach has always to take multivitamins and omega 3 myself and trust that it is getting into the milk. I have to say that I think the reason that babies get vitamins from formula is that the manufacturers have to put back in what has been taken out during the processing, no?

Just my thoughts... will be interested to see what others have read.

Ah, I see you have had the best advice! Cross posted as I had a toddler time delay factor...

Formula manufacturers add in some of the stuff that's been removed, it's true, chunglimum.

The cows milk used in formula has had much of the fat removed from it, and as some of the vitamins are actually in the fat (because they dissolve in it) the final product is short of vits. So they put a version of these vitamins in the final product.

It's reasonable for you to take vitamins and other supplements, and some of this may end up in the breastmilk you produce and from there into your daughter The evidence is that your milk would be fine anyway, but if you were very short of this stuff from your normal diet, then you could become even shorter of it because of bf. However, there is some research to show that supps of LCPUFAs (like the omega 3 you're taking) might directly benefit the milk.

There's a lot of rather confused research about this, and I am naturally sceptical when people try to make mothers feel worried about milk quality so they can sell them stuff
