Hello

My name is Karen and I'm BellaBear's younger sister. I'm a medical student in PLymouth and doing a presentation on some aspects of breast feeding in... um... 7 hours!!

I've done academic research on papers etc (I don't leave EVERYTHING to the last minute) and as an avid knitter I thought it would be useful to knit a breast - to keep the lesson a bit more interesting and lively and help the tactile learners etc.

However, after sewing it up last night, I had the sudden realisation that I don't have a CLUE how to use a knitted breast to help aid teaching breast feeding. My sister suggested someone on this site might be able to help.

Does anyone have any suggestions????

I really appreciate any help.

Cheers
Karen

There was a very good review article in the BMJ a few months back about breastfeeding.

It didn't so much cover the practical aspects of breastfeeding but focussed more on the health and nutritional benefits associated with it, medical problems that can arise, weight gain in BF babies and how HCPs can help and support a BFing patient. I found it very interesting from both and personal and professional basis.

Hope your presentation went OK and that your audience appreciated your knitted boob.

I think it will be great. We had a knitted uterus in our antenatal class. It does help you explain things. Some fab info and tips on this thread.

Whatever next?

Hello everyone

THANK YOU ALL for your advice, information and pointers. I did the presentation which I think went well. I aimed it quite simply for some people who may have no idea about breastfeeding and why it's beneficial and also difficulties women face when trying to start breastfeeding.

I read the BMJ article back in April and htought it was excelletn and photocopied it for my sister. I think I'm going to bring in a copy to our next class as the more techy individuals wanted more 'proof'.

I am also going to try giving back the doll I bought as it's quite frankly scary! Love my boob tho.

Thanks again,#Karen
