I think I might have a blocked duct but I'm confused - help!

About an hour ago I noticed a lump high up in my breast, just below the armpit. It was quite tender to the touch (ie. when DD leant on it - ouch!) I latched her onto that side and she fed for 10 minutes or so. I can't feel a lump anymore but that side of my breast is still tender. There's no red patch. It must have appeared within the hour before I found it as I hadn't noticed it before. Can anyone shed any light? Thanks

Hiya

yes sound very much like a blocked duct

some mothers find it helpful to place warm or cold flannels on the sore area

it can also be helpful to try to latch baby so she is latched with her chin towards teh area that is sore (can make for some inventive posistions) as she feeds

(and if you get worried please call a BFC line)

Thanks I'm confused though because the lump's gone (for now at least). Am wondering whether DD's cleared it v quick or if it's going to pop up again later. Never had one before, DD's 15 months. Strangely enough I've been posting advice on a lot of blocked duct threads recently, think I've caught it!

she could perhaps have cleared it yes.. some babies are very efficient at doing this..

hopefully you did catcch it and wont have any furhter discomfort

ShowOfHands · 31/10/2008 18:23

You've probably caught it but feed lots on that side to make sure. It does feel very bruised to the touch afterwards.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 31/10/2008 18:26

Hope so. Probably it's still sore from where the blockage has been and it'll settle down soon.

Yes that's what it feels like ShowofHands. Oh good, hopefully I've caught it then. Should I stick to this breast now for the bedtime feed then so it's been used twice in a row?

I would to be on the safe side. If the other side feels a bit full at all you can express a little from it if you can just to prevent a blockage on the other side (probably be fine though).

I've had blockages that appear suddenly and I can 'feed away' quite quickly. Some linger for a long time. Always feel bruised afterwards though.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 31/10/2008 18:40

Cool. Never get full now DD is older so shouldn't have a problem. Will hand express if I need to. Thankyou

Only on MN would I ever ask this...

How's your boob?

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 01/11/2008 21:44

Just seen this ShowofHands Seems ok, little bit tender but no lump has come back. Yay! Was worried about getting mastitis there for a while

It'll be tender for a couple of days. Funny how sensitive a blocked duct can make you when a toddler chewing and kneading several times a day is fine.

Mastitis is horrid. I'm glad you're fine.

Tis ShowOfHands btw, I'm being a bit bah humbug about all the Hallowe'en, bonfire, Christmas stuff.

CharCharGabor · 01/11/2008 22:03

It is funny indeed. DD reminds me of a kitten when she's feeding All that kneading. I noticed your namechange on another thread, sounds like a good idea to me!
