DS2 has been sick after every feed today getting progressively worse- phoned hospital who said he was being a pig and that was why he's not holding it in (that and the green poos). Hes fine otherwise but can't hold anything down. They suggested that DH take him and get him to sleep without a feed for 3/4 hrs if poss to give his tummy a rest. Hmm sounds like sound advice in theory but the longest we've managed is 1 1/2 hrs so far. thought i'd try to feed again as he was howling in hunger to yes another projectile vomit

anyone got any tips- am just about to hose myself of again

Oh, I so painfully remember this with ds1. Dh actually fed him in the bath once assuming he'd bring the next lot back. He didn't, but he did poo (yuck) but dh is made of sturdy stuff!

Do you think it's a bug? If so you might have to let his tummy settle. Putting him in his car seat and going for a drive might settle him.

Otherwise if it's wind, have you tried Infacol or Dentinox and winding after every ounce?

ceciliaaherne · 29/10/2008 23:37

How old is he? There are lots of tummy bugs goiung round just now but if he is tiny it is unlikely to be that.

WheresTheAuPair · 30/10/2008 05:01

He's only a week old and breastfed. I'm using infacol already. Some feeds its like nothing touches the sides as it comes up as warm milk instantly!

When did this start WheresTheAuPair, and when you say projectile, how projectile?
How is he sleeping and how is he in himself?

WheresTheAuPair · 30/10/2008 10:48

He was quite vomity from the start IYKWIM (CS baby) but it was yesterday that he really began being sick after literally every feed and then wanting to feed every hour rather tahn every 3- oddly- after i posted this thread he's been sick twice more last night (before 12) then he kept his feed down and slept til 5.30 (kept it down again and then fed at 8.30 today- he's still sleeping at the moment.

Just phoned my MW again who still thinks he's just being a pig and taking in too much milk. Looks like he was in a cycle of being sick and wanting more milk which he couldn't keep down?

So he's been sleeping well since 12 last night and no sick as yet since then. Also he seems fine in himself-still green poos tho.

Projectile in that I got a faceful when it ricocheted off my neck and into my face last night! Also onto sofa and floor and in bra...if that gives you a better picture! (had i not had my mouth closed it would have gone in there too)

is it reflux?

Wispabarsareback · 30/10/2008 11:15

Reflux doesn't usually cause projectile vomiting - milk and food just sort of 'slide' back upwards, IYSWIM. I'd be concerned about it - not sure I'd just accept the MW's opinion. It's a pain, but maybe take him to the GP? Green poos can be a sign of poor feeding too.

ghosty · 30/10/2008 11:21

WheresTheAuPair - I only ask because my DS was sicky from the start but at around a week (just over) he started projectile vomitting most feeds ... he was diagnosed with reflux to start with but he ended up having a condition called Pyloric Stenosis which is not that rare (although I have not met anyone else whose child has had it, there was another MNer sometime ago I think).
Symptoms are projectile vomitting and very hungry between feeds due to the constant vomitting. Not normally picked up until at least 3 weeks old (I was told DS was 'too young' to have it when I first took him to the docs) ...
I don't want to panic you but it is serious but VERY easily and simply fixed (small op - DS had his at 4 weeks and was feeding normally within hours of op - he is a strapping nearly 9 year old now, pictures of him on my profile)
It may NOT be that, and I don't want to worry you ... so don't panic but do take him to the doctor and get him weighed and checked out. If he is really projectile vomiting every feed he will struggle to put on weight. DS recovered his birth weight by 1 week but by 4 weeks had gone under his birth weight by a considerable amount.
It took us a while to be believed by the doctors as we first took him to the doctor at 12 days old (too young) and it wasn't until he had an ultra sound at 4 weeks that they diagnosed him.

It could, of course, be reflux ... which you would need help from the gp for anyway, so DO get him checked.

ghosty · 30/10/2008 11:23

And one week old babies are NOT 'pigs' or greedy

foxinsocks · 30/10/2008 11:23

you must take him to the GP. Could be reflux, could be a bug, could by pyloric sten whatever it is called. But at that age, you must get him checked out.

also, at that age, when you get to the doctor's, ask if you can sit away from the waiting room because there are loads of horrid chesty/vom bugs around

foxinsocks · 30/10/2008 11:24

in fact, at that age, I would take him right now. I'd be tempted to take him to the hospital if you really think he isn't keeping anything down.

RubyShivers · 30/10/2008 11:24

reflux can cause projectile vomiting Wispa, although as Ghosty has said Pyloric Stenosis may also be a cause

in any case, projectile vomiting in such a young baby should be thoroughly checked out even to rule things out

ghosty · 30/10/2008 11:29

this explains what Pyloric Stenosis is, with symptoms and how they fix it

Heated · 30/10/2008 14:40

Is he any better?

Agree with foxinsocks about taking your ds to be checked out at the hospital if he still isn't able to keep down a feed.

When they said he'd be a "greedy pig" I assumed he was being bottle fed

WheresTheAuPair · 30/10/2008 16:07

he's kept all feeds down since 12 last night now. I'm taking him with me tho in the morning to see doctor as i've run out of painkillers! also, community MW coming out to sign us off and health visitor just phoned to say she is coming too! (going to be a busy morning in the WTAP house tomorrow).

He's slept loads today-what i've been doing is feeding, winding then putting him down in his propped up moses basket and he's been sleeping loads with no sick. If I hold him too much he starts suckling my neck/arm/hands/bib and demands food!

Its so strange that yesterday he must have vomited 14 or so times (everything up) and today nothing. Fingers crossed then I guess.

Thanks for the Pyloric Stenosis info Ghosty- i'll keep an eye on him.

thanks everyone for your support x
