Sorry I dont know but I would love to know myself. Ds is 9 weeks and we often have left boob strike.
No idea why. Hopefully someone will come along and tell us.

lollyheart · 28/10/2008 20:35

I should say ds is 7 weeks.

Have you tried changing the feeding position on the right side? If you put him in a rugby ball hold he may be fooled into thinking it's the left boob IYSWIM?!

Lots of MNetters recommend cranial osteopathy for this too if you can afford a couple of sessions....good luck BTW it's probably just a passing phase.

Anglepoise · 28/10/2008 20:57

I was going to mention osteopathy. We had a session last week for DD and during it the osteopath asked whether she preferred the left boob - I'd noticed that she did but assumed it's because it's easier to get milk out or something (it leaks much more than the right one!). The osteopath said that DD's jaw was slightly lopsided and it was easier for her to latch on to the left boob than the right. We are going back for a second session this week and she said she'd try to sort it out (not that it's a huge issue, but the first session seemed to help her a lot). If this is the issue then the rugby ball hold should help

DD1 always seemed to take against one boob or the other - she was a nightmare to feed. I used to get her underway on her "favourite" boob and then switch her over once she'd got drowsy. It mostly worked.

What is osteopathy and how does it work?
Does it cost alot?

cranial osteopathy is very gentle they use gentle pressure (I think) to move things back to where they need to be. Costs vary quite a bit according to area, it really is worth it - most babies have been very battered around whether born by V or Csec, really I think maternity units should have them I think it would save a lot of hassle all around.

deaconblue · 28/10/2008 21:29

ds and dd both did this at a few weeks old and especially in the middle of the night when I just wanted them to get on with feeding. I found with both if I moved them to rugby ball hold they were conned into feeding from the side they were complaining about.

primigravida · 28/10/2008 22:05

I wouldn't worry too much about it. My ds won't take the right breast either most of the time so my left breast makes more milk to makeup for it. I'm a little bit lopsided but am still happily bf ds who's now 12months without needing any formula. According to my hv it's quite common for babies to have a preference.

Thats good to know primigravida

Some info about cranial osteopathy here. I think it's manipulation of the ligaments (but very very gentle on babies) and is based on the theory that babies get all squished up during pregnancy and birth and sometimes need help unfolding. I'm not totally convinced by it, but it does seem to have helped DD and cured me of a hip problem I'd had for over a decade and that physiotherapy and acupuncture had both failed to sort out

First place we booked was £95 for the first session but that is unusually expensive and we phoned back and cancelled (stupidly only asked how much it was at the end of the phone call ). The place we ended up taking DD is £43 for the first session and £28 for subsequent ones, which is a more usual price.

Thanks for the info anglepoise

Well fingers crossed last night and this morning he seems to be taking the right side i think he prefers the left tho.
