Anyone taken citalopram whilst bfing?

Went to doctor's yesterday with depression. Was nervous about it, doc was mega weird and dd wouldn't stop crying so I totally forgot to ask if the tabs were suitable for bfing. It's citalopram 10mg, one a day before bed. DD is 14months and feeds 4 times a day and 3-4 during the night. I'm going to ring bfn drugline when dd wakes up from her nap but just wondered if anyone had any experience taking this whilst bfing. The info on Lactnet and bfn is quite vague. Thanks

I did, based on some interweb research and info from my (very good) GP.

While it does come into breastmilk at a slightly higher rate than some other ADs (e.g. Seroxtat), it is still a minute amount. And the only adverse reaction - a single case - was in a much younger baby, so I was very happy to continue bf DD, who was then 7 months old.

I think I got most of my info from Kellymom, but BFN should have all the answers you need too. I think it is vague because there are only a small no of studies for Citalopram.

And you're on the smallest dose there is (the case studies are of people taking 40-60mg) so bear that in mind too. I am sure you will be fine.

HTH and that it works for you - it did for me!

I had escitalopram which (I think) is the same but stronger, I continued bfing but started cutting down (I was going back to work so needed to anway). My (incredibly supportive, pro-bf) HV recommended cutting down and stopping because she said that it is something synthetic in the milk.

I saw no difference in dd, other than she was a much 'nicer' child - which could either be due to the escitalopram, or more likely to the fact that I was so much happier and more able to deal with her.

Thanks. Will probably take it although I will check with bfn just for my own peace of mind. I'll keep an eye on her for side effects so I can change if need be.
