Am I the only exbf who actually thinks the Little Britian 'Bitty' sketch is hillarious?

And I am not getting at anyone who doesn't, but really does no one else think it's funny?

OP posts:
carmenelectra · 22/10/2008 13:30

Of course its meant to offend and shock, but its one of those things that shouldnt really be funny, but it is.

I cant see how bitty is meant to be offensive to extended bfeeders though. I dont see any connection with bf a toddler or even an older child and the bitty bloke. He is clearly just a weirdo!

Bitty may be used as a joke about bf by some people, but i still dont see how its some kind of dig at extended bfers??

sweetkitty · 22/10/2008 13:33

I don't find it offensive just not funny.

I keep wanting to scream "but he wouldn't be able to latch on"

HaventSleptForAYear · 22/10/2008 16:40

But I have seen it umpteen times on here carmenelectra.

Noone has ever said it to my face (luckily for them!)

And plenty of people think it's wierd feeding even past 6mths (have been told THAT to my face).

CatIsSleepy · 22/10/2008 16:45

am with VVVQ, used to find LB funny, but not any more

now it is just offensive i reckon and not funny either
they should have quite while they were (marginally) ahead

policywonk · 22/10/2008 16:56

Fair enough if it suits your sense of humour I suppose.

But for me, I don't see how it can be interpreted as anything other than a dig at bf-ing (extended or otherwise). The whole premise of the joke (it seems to me) is that bf-ing is slightly revolting - just about tolerable in a newborn, but in general wildly disturbing and upsetting. If Lucas and Walliams didn't think that about bf-ing then surely there'd be no point to the joke at all? Of course no-one knows a 30-year-old who bfs, but humour is all about comic extrapolation. It seems to me that the joke is basically saying 'isn't bf-ing horrid - look how repulsive it is when an adult does it'.

I happened to catch a bit of the US series the other day and watched the bitty sketch in passing. The interesting thing was that it seemed to be the women in the audience who responded to the sketch - couldn't hear any male voices at all - and they were shrieking in revulsion, not laughter, in the main. Seems to me that Lucas and Walliams have given women another self-loathing tool (as well as arming those who wish to make life difficult for breastfeeding mothers, as others have pointed out).

OrmIrian · 22/10/2008 16:57

What policywonk said.

WinkyWinkola · 22/10/2008 18:01

Totally agree with Policywonk's eloquent post.

Nancy66 · 22/10/2008 19:03

Totally disagree.

The best humour usually is slightly offensive. I think Little Britain was very funny when it began - starting to get a little tired now and the US series is very weak. However, in the early days it was funny.

The 'bitty' sketch is no more of a dig at BF'ers than Davith or Sebastian are digs at gays. It's a comedy sketch - good comedy does tend to make you cringe or uncomfortable or awkward.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/10/2008 20:08

Which bit are you disagreeing with nanchy?

Nancy66 · 22/10/2008 20:42

That it's a dig at women that breastfeed - it's a dig at women that breastfeed 30 year olds, yes, but as they don't actually exist I can't really see the cause for offence

mehgalegs · 22/10/2008 20:45

I have watched on episode of the new series and found it dull. I did have a bit of a giggle at the male body builders with the tiny cocks.

Bitty has been done to death.

The yneed to move on.

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 22/10/2008 20:51

I don't like Little Britain as I think that we end up laughing with the nasty, racist, sexist characters we were supposed to be laughing at.

BUt I saw the American bitty sketch for the first time since bfing ds the other day, and it surprised me how not shocked I was? See, I thought I might bf til 2 or 3 but now... . I was only really really shocked when he wanted 'bitty' from other woman - because it then became a bit perverse and sexual.

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 22/10/2008 20:52

PS IMO you can find something funny but still think it is inappropriate and harmful.

FlabbyTumSquashyBum · 22/10/2008 21:06

I'm with the majority. The sketch itself doesn't bother me. What I find very tiresome are the references to bitty when talking about extended bfers. It's become a phrase used by (mainly) women to undermine the wonderful relationship that other women have with their children.

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 22/10/2008 21:11

Yes, I agree. It is because people are saying there is something perverse and weird about bf a child.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/10/2008 21:27

So you dont totally disagree with the fact that it could be offensive when levelled at b/feeders?

harpsichordcarrier · 22/10/2008 21:51

I read an interview with Lucas and Williams and they said the bitty sketch was a piss take of extended bfing. it was in the Saturday Guardian, a while ago
will try and see if I can google it.

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 22/10/2008 21:58

Who me VVV? Sorry, perhaps I wasn't being clear. Was replying to Flabbytum in second post. Of course it is offensive when levelled at b/feeders because they are implying there is something perverse and weird about bf a child (which it isn't). It is also offensive because it undermines the relationship between the mother and child to a caricature.

Oh, sleep deprived brain... I know what I mean

harpsichordcarrier · 22/10/2008 21:59

ah bollocks, I can't find it, inevitably.
they said in the interview that the idea from the sketch came after they read about someone who was bf their two year old, leading to a discussion about still feeding at school etc etc
I will keep googling.
obviously they took it to absurd levels, but there is a pretty vile undercurrent of misogyny in their comedy.
The bubbles character makes me feel incredibly uncoomfortable too

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/10/2008 22:00

No, not you umwahahahah
Was reply to nancy.

Harpsi! Where in feck have you been?

Salleroo · 22/10/2008 22:02

I always found most of LB funny, love Andy and Lou and Daffyd. But for some reason the 'Bitty' sketch turns my stomach. It has nothing to do with the actual bfeeding aspect. I just think of my grown menfriends at their mothers breast and it turns my stomach, the whole Freudian thing if you will . I actually zone out and look at the wall while it's on. It is so not funny.

OrmIrian · 23/10/2008 09:56

Comedy becomes offensive when the intention behind the joke is malicious. Not satirical, or mildly fun-poking, but malicious. And I get a strong whiff of malicious mysogyny from Little Britain. There are some ishoos there without a doubt,.

bamboostalks · 23/10/2008 09:59

Totally unfunny, they have serious issues around women an ddemeaning them.

Notanexcitingname · 23/10/2008 10:37

I don't find ANY of Little Britain funny. Offensive? well, a 30 yo man in nappies would be seen as funny, (not by me, but I often think my sense of humour has come from a different planet to the rest of society)

Those who use bitty as an insult to exbf's are deeply limited in imagination, which I do in fact find offensive. That and the fact that it is clearly meant as an insult.

carmenelectra · 23/10/2008 12:42

Agree with you Nancy, totally.

Just dont see how its supposed to mean bf is horrid. People are just reading something sinister into comedy.

Like nancy said, is sebastian a dig at all gays? Matt Lucas is gay himself.

Lighten up!
