I haven't heard of anything pharmacological, but you can try to boost your supply by eating foods that are thought to be galactalogues.

ilovemydog · 19/10/2008 13:35

yes - metoclopramide

lulumama · 19/10/2008 13:36

domperidone

why do you think that you don;t have much milk... ? pumping does not accurately reflect how much milk your baby takes

is he weeing / pooing, settled, happy etc

See here for more advice.

IMO judging by the previous Threads it probably would be easier and better to use mor "natural" methods.I'm sure the MN BF Experts will be along to advise you further soon.....

Depends on circumstances.

We were in a car crash last week and supply was affected. GP prescribed metoclopramide to help stimulate lactation in addition to doing all the other things - skin to skin, frequent feeding, compression.

op asked if there was anything her gp could prescribe.

Just trying to give my opinion, maybe she is not aware of other techniques, which are surely less extreme than Drug induced stimulation.

lollyheart · 19/10/2008 15:12

To be honest my boobs dont get used very much

I latch him on before each feed but because he is mostly ff he gets angry and will only stay on each side for a couple on mins i have tried all the natural methods.

How do the drugs work? does in trick my body into thinking i have just given birth and start again iyswim.

The drugs wouldnt make your body "start again", they would increase the amount of milk that you are making.
Have you tried making FF harder for your baby - ie newborn size teat? Might make it seem like less of an easy option for him.

lulumama · 19/10/2008 15:21

i would see a lactation consultant or get in touch with the LLL or NCT or ABM

unfortunately, teh less you stimulate your breasts by putting the baby to them, the less your milk will be stimulated to produce

if you want to continue mixed feeding, you might find it a very hard battle, it m ight be easier to re establish exclusive breast feeding, but you need some RL help and quickly

the best way to boost supply is to take to bed with your baby, skin to skin and let him suckle as much as he needs and wants to

lollyheart pumping never worked for me and just left me feeling inadequate and demoralised as I didn't have time for all that washing and sterilising and pumping just for ten ml or so - what DID help was learning how to hand-express without worrying about catching/keeping the milk. I just constantly expressed in the shower/into a tissue/into a towel. V. undignified and a real waste in one way but I could do it as and when without thought to quantities. I got my milk supply back from just drops to little streams to baby-feeding amounts and was able to feed ds not exclusively but quite a bit (and I was an extreme case of everything going wrong!) In my case the priority was just getting the milk out to tell my body I still needed it as ds had decided he preferred ff. I also put ds to suckle for pleasure when not hungry as then he would give it a go instead of screaming.

I also did the hand-express-into-a-towel-(which you then bung in the washing-machine) thing with dd all the time when I had insufficient supply and am happy to report at 7 months we are still bfing very happily.

If this is rubbish advice please say so all you knowledgeable people on here, it's just a desperation measure that worked for me when all else had failed!

lolly - you need to speak to someone knowledgable (see contact ideas for NCT etc). The doctor can prescribe meds, but they will not work unless you express (by hand is a good option, see SummerChicken's post) and/or breastfeed effectively at least 8 times in 24 hours - it is hard work but it really is the only way your body will make more milk.

Hope you get the help you need.
