Mixing formula with half boiled half tap water?

I didn't think I'd have to worry about this again but here I am .

As DD seems determined to wake up for a feed about 3am again (she's 9mo) I need a way to make the feeds warm as she has now decided she doesn't want room temp cartons (don't blame her, it's blummin' freezing at nights now) and I would do anything to avoid getting out of my warm pit. I'm thinking of ways to warm the bottles as nothing really worked before.

Anyway, if I made up the feed when needed with half boiling water, added powder and then added half cold tap water, I could keep it all by the bed (travel kettle) and do it there and then. DD drinks tap water anyway now in her cup so there's no reason this isn't ok, is there?

what age is DD? not sure how advisable tap water is for babies ???
what i do (now did!!) was make up bottle before bed and when DS woke i went downstairs boiled kettle poured out a third of already cooled bottle and added boiled, made it nice and warm

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 20:34

She's 9 months and I was told that tap water was fine for them to drink from 6 months, so she has been for drinks throughout the day. Still always boiled water in the milk though.

i thinking it may be bending the rules
couldnt you have half hot boiled water and half cooled boiled water as a better compromise

Lib76 · 17/10/2008 20:37

yeh guess if that's what you were told then go for it. try waht i suggested though it's a good way to warm bottle and pretty quick. good luck. oh, don't fill kettle too full otherwise you will be there forever!!!

Sazisi · 17/10/2008 20:39

Coudl you keep some boiled water in a flask by your bed? You might have to experimnet a bit first, maybe cool the water slightly before putting in the flask so it's not still too hot at 3am..
I only used boiled water for mixing formula regardless of age, but not sure why..

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 20:39

LOL, didn't think of that littleducks!

She's just horribly impatient and I'm horribly lazy. I got out of bed all last winter to warm bottles and I really can't face the thought of doing it again.

Can ypu get one of those bottle warmer thingummies?

fishie · 17/10/2008 20:42

you have to mix the milk powder with hot water because it isn't sterile. tap is ok at 9m so i think original plan sounds fine.

onepieceoflollipop · 17/10/2008 20:42

Could you take a carton into bed with you? Or would it be quicker to warm a carton up than faffing around with kettles and powder etc.

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 20:43

Bottle warmer was too slow and I was never sure of the temp of water in a flask when she woke up. If it was too hot I'd have to cool it anyway and if it was too cold then it's downstairs again. She screams blue murder if she doesn't get a bottle immediately.

I was going to suggest having the carton in bed too! Then it will be your temperature rather than the air temperature outside of the duvet!

onepieceoflollipop · 17/10/2008 20:46

spottywellies I got that tip from someone on here.

I was worrying earlier in the year then dd seemed to drop some nights - now the little madam darling has decided she does quite like a little warm milk in the night.

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 20:47

Haha! Will try that tonight. I'd be fab if that worked

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 20:47

It'd be fab, obviously...although I am quite fab...

Aren't we all fab and full of good ideas?

onepieceoflollipop · 17/10/2008 20:49

Yes we are all fab, and full of fab ideas x-posts with you Eyeballs

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 20:50

I'll come back at 3am and let you know how fab you all are...or if I'm freezing my conkers off standing at the microwave!

Doesn't the water have to be boiled and then cooled for 30 minutes so that the proteins in the milk powder are neither damaged by water that is too hot nor the powder only partially dissolved by water that is too cold - thus causing tummy ache because the baby is drinking undissolved milk powder.

I think there is science involved in the preparation of formula feed that is important fot nutrition and digestion.

I would just take a fresh bottle up to bed with me and stick on a bottle warmer - even the one I had years ago for DS1 warmed up in a matter of minutes

DraculaNeedsArteries · 17/10/2008 20:51

Leave a carton in teh airing cupboard ...even warmer.

My MIL tells of a story where she used to make her bottles of formula before she went to bed with boiling water. Wrap it i 2 towels; stick it in teh airing cupboard..and aparently it had just cooled to perfect temp at DPs usual waking time.

Think of the bugs growing in that all night has it festers around 30-45C

Anifrangapani · 17/10/2008 20:52

We did the half boiled half tap from quite an early age.... worked a treat and both kids survived.

DS was into eating slugs by the time we did it anyway so I figured a few more germs wasn't going to harm him

onepieceoflollipop · 17/10/2008 20:56

I may well be here at 3am sobbing that I feel like I am being tormented by dd2 and she is a dummy addict!

Mandelbrot · 17/10/2008 20:58

Top tip lollipop!

I was going to say use half boiled water and half Evian, then add the milk. Normally you can't use mineral water for babies, but I believe Evian is OK.

Bubbaluv · 17/10/2008 20:59

Other than killing the potential bacteria in the powder, what good does boiling tap water do anyway?

onepieceoflollipop · 17/10/2008 21:00

I am afraid that I used a microwave jug of hot water just to take the chill off cartons of milk (Poured into bottle first) then shook it like mad to remove any "hot spots".

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 17/10/2008 21:03

I could just take the microwave upstairs... I need someone to design me a half fridge/half microwave combi. Then I can put made up bottles in the fridge and heat them up, all without leaving the comfort of my bed
