Lazy latch and detach in older baby - ouch! What can I do? What are the best feeding positions?

DD is 12 mo and her teeth steadily embed into the base of my nipple as she's feeding. This gets sore. Then this morning at 5am when she woke I brought her to bed to feed laying down and we both fell asleep again and then she pulled off whilst gripping her teeth together. Really sore. So now I've noticed the nipple is scuffed and cracked. The other looks at bit iritated too. So I've used Kamillosan.

Obviously I will try not to fall asleep again until I have detached her nicely next time. But I'm wondering if there are any good feeding positions to prevent her teeth embedding as she's feeding? It seems to be worst when I'm sitting up feeding her laying across my lap.

Any tips gratefully appreciated.

That sounds really painful!!

I never had a problem with DD using her teeth, but she did used to give me the occassional bite.
I dealt with that by stopping feeds immediately and making sure she was well aware of how unacceptable it was.
Do you think your problem is down to the position in which you are feeding, or simply that your DD needs to keep her teeth out of the way. (As most babies are capable of doing).

Have you tried to teach her that engaged teeth mean an end to the feed? She is certainly old enough to learn that one.

Can you lift her a bit higher so her head isn't tipped as far back? I am having the same problem with DD, and I find that this means the teeth don't dig in as much. Is your DD teething atm? DD is and that always make her latch go a bit wonky. Feeding lying down is the best position for us as when she's on my lap she slouches herself down so her teeth drag, but obviously that's not always practical so I just try to cradle her as high as I can.
