Bung bottle in a jug of boiling water. Much quicker than a bottle warmer

Def don't use microwave

make with freshly boiled water and cool as per new guidelines, bottles should be made as needed, ask your MW for a leaflet

or for the early days, if you can , use ready mixed formula

MamaG · 14/10/2008 08:39

oops
am a bit out of date I think - thanks for clarifying lulu!

(or breastfeed, then you don't need to worry about temperature )

The guidelines are always changing - I've had 3DD's in the last 4 years and something different has been advised every time ! I agree with Lulu, try and make hem as you go but if that isn't always possible then I would warm the bottle in a jug of boiling water as per MamaG's suggestion

I used to microwave it for 10 secs. But my MW did say this was fine... I now realise she may have been wrong neuking my baby

Defo don't use bottle warmer takes FOREVER!

Jug of boiling water works.

mamadiva · 14/10/2008 08:50

Fio I made 6 every night and just added the powder as I needed it LOL this was only 2Years ago BTW.

FoghornLeghorn · 14/10/2008 08:55

When DD1 was born 4 yrs ago I used to make up a whole days worth of bottles and store them in the fridge, take out half hour before I need it .... voila !! (Disclaimer ..... as per midwife/hospital guidelines at the time !)

The Department of Health advice has been the same since 2005 - bottles should be made up with hot water fresh each time. This vastly reduces the risk of babies getting a serious infection due to bacteria in the milk powder, and the advice was introduced after some babies died in Europe from this.

You can download the advice here

I used to make up one batch of bottles in the morning and store them in the fridge. The bottles were sterilized and the milk was made with boiling water. None of my children ever had a stomach infection whilst bottle fed.

I also used to microwave the bottles to warm them up. When I asked my health visitor if this was OK, because of the advice on the milk tin not to, she told me that that advice was aimed at the careless few who wouldn't shake the milk up well and let it stand for a moment to prevent 'hot spots' within the milk.

Again, none of my children seem to have suffered at all through the use of the microwave - no injuries, no health problems.

I think if you are sensible and careful, there's no problem with using the microwave (or with making up more than one feed at a time, to be honest).

MamaD - I did the same as you. Also my MW said, as long as the bottle wasn't straight from teh fridge, there was no need to warm it. The baby wouldn't know what temperature the milk should be and if they always had it cold, they wouldn't know any better. I mix fed my DS, so he was used to warm breast milk, but never objected to cold formula!
