One really sore nipple and breast that's going abit solid...

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 09/10/2008 20:33

My right nipple was sore today so since about midday I have stuck mainly to the left but now up the right side of my right breast is sore - not engorged I don't think because I get engorged everytime DS leaves a long gap between feeds and eventually I kind of burst , but this is like a solid bit forming. I cannot see any red (I had bad mastitus when DS was first born) but possibly by coicidence I have a bad cold... probably just a bad cold but I did feel quite like this when I ad it last time (well, much worse, I couldn't move at all). Erm, how can I make it better? Just feed from that side and massage? It's really sore

Sounds like a blocked milk duct. If left alone it could become mastitus and with your symptoms I probably wouldn't leave it more than a few days without going to the GP to get checked, especially if you don't start feeling better or get worse. On this page are some tips for how to clear a blocked duct. I've heard that combing under the shower and changing baby's position so chin is by blockage are the most effective. I hope it clears for you soon.

BlueBumedFly · 09/10/2008 20:38

Perhaps you have a blocked duct? I was told to have a warm shower and massage the area. Also to keep feeding from that side if you can manage it?

Do you have one of those warm microwave things? My friend used one (not hot!) to help massage a blocked duct once.

I am sure there are lots of BF gurus out here tonight so hopefully I can bump you to the top and someone can come help.

I stumbled through BF, was never very good but stuck with it out of sure bloody mindedness in the end I think!!

CharCharGabor · 09/10/2008 20:38

You could try some ibuprofen as well maybe, to relieve the pain a bit?

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 09/10/2008 20:45

Thanks, will shower & comb and feed. Just thought, is Lemsip OK while BFing? I hate swallowing tablets...

try not to feed more from one side than the other, try to feed as normal offering a different breast first at each feed. what is happening is the same as when you hurt one food and start hopping on the other: it gets sore...

do you know why your nipple was sore? what kind of pain is it and can you see anything amiss?

agree with blocked duct and have nothing to add to advice already given in that respect.

hope it is better soon
by the way what gorgeous kiddies

madmouse · 09/10/2008 20:47

foot obviously, not food

whereismumhiding · 09/10/2008 20:49

Try NCT Breastfeeding helpline, I found them really helpful: 0870 444 8708 (open 7 days 8am-10pm). I agree with the others, does sound like blocked milk duct, massaging it out and heat does work if it is that.
Hope you feel better soon, xxxx

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 09/10/2008 20:49

Not sure on Lemsip, hang on will check round and see if I can find anything.

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 09/10/2008 20:50

Not sure, it wasn't that early days hard nipple pain, more like abit raw type pain. Almost like DS had been feeding for hours and hours on it (although he probably had!) DS stirring now, shall try and feed it away [wince] Thanks by the way, I am glad I deleted my dancing pictures half hour or so ago!

According to BFN, Lemsip is fine as it's paracetamol based. Link here

BlueBumedFly · 09/10/2008 20:52

Not sure on lemsip as it contains psudoephridrine (sp?) don't you have to follow all the same rules as when you were pregnant when it comes to medication?

Hope you feel better soon. If you are feeling flu-ish I would see a doc, perhaps it is mastitis, it can come on really fast.

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 09/10/2008 20:54

thankyou so much, nipple a bit less sore, massging now (hence dodgy typing)

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 09/10/2008 20:54

How's your latch? Is the nipple still painful (once you come back from this feed I mean)? Poor you, I hope it all clears up quickly.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 09/10/2008 20:56

xpost, glad nipple is better. Have you got a shower you can run on the blockage or even a bowl of warm water you could dip your breast into? Will help the massage move it all.

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 09/10/2008 20:56

he has an ace latch, tried to get nip in further though which helped. He may have fed last night off the end abit hence the raw feeing.

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 09/10/2008 20:58

will shower it, thanks.

Sounds familiar, DD used to do that when sleepy and it does feel kind of raw, I agree. DD's has now been replaced with teething rubbing rawness as getting canines! Can you feel the lump moving at all?

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 09/10/2008 20:59

So many xposts

Re: can I take Lemsip when breast feeding?Just asked my friend who is a pharmacist. She wouldnt recommend to a BF mum taking one with sudoephrine in it (heavy flu ones) as quite strong and would cross over to baby, so to be on safe side... Really you ought to check with pharmacist as depends on age and health of your baby. She said when she was breastfeeding her baby she happily had lemsips with paracetomol and phenylephrine in it when he was a bit older, as it isnt so strong.

You could just take the paracetomol and wash it down with a hot squash drink pretending it is a lemsip, if you have a very young baby!

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 09/10/2008 21:22

not moving yet...

If I suspect mastitus do I have to go to GPs for ABs etc., or do I just feed it out? Feeling like death warmed up (or not as the case may be ) ATM.

OP posts:
CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 10/10/2008 00:24

If I were you I think I'd probably go to the doctors as you sound like you're feeling quite rough. You can just feed through it but there's comes a point when you need to treat. Keep feeding on it if you can, and expressing if you can't. If you do get antibs, I would also buy some probiotics like acidophilus to ward off thrush. You can get it in Holland and Barretts. I hope you feel better tomorrow.

LadyOfWaffleIsScaryEnough · 10/10/2008 11:32

It is mastitus woke up with a red patch. I am scared of taking ABs as last time I got thrush and couldn't treat because of stitches, it was awful!

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 10/10/2008 17:58

Just saw this for you, hope it clears up for you. The page I linked to above says you don't need abs if your symptoms are mild and have been there for less than 24 hours. Only needed if symptoms acute and haven't started improving within 12-24 hours. So feed feed feed and take painkillers. How are you feeling this evening. If you do need abs, really get the acidophilus. I used it for dd and I when we had abs a week apart from each other, and although DD got a thrush nappy rash no other symptoms and I didn't get it at all.
