Co sleeping and breastfeeding question

Hi everyone,

DD is 4 weeks old and we have been co sleeping for the last few weeks (moses basket has turned into great bed side storage for tv remote etc lol). I also co slept with DS but I seem to remember he was older - I know I didnt worry about this anyway.

SIDS recommendations say to put baby on their back to sleep and when I put her down I always do this. If I am still awake after a feed I also roll her onto her back. The last few nights though I have fallen asleep feeding and realised she is sleeping on her side. She also seems much happier this way.

DD was full term, 8 lb 12 oz at birth and very, erm, robust - has put on a pound a week since birth so isnt the tiny baby you would worry about squashing - she can also move her head around to breathe quite a bit.

Any ideas? Should I really be staying awake at this stage through feeds to turn her back onto her back?

thanks
Axxx

Dont know if others will agree but I have co-slept with all 3 of mine and never turned them onto their backs, sometimes they turned themselves but I never turned them. TBH they slept on their sides in a moses basket swaddled at this age and they all loved the basket too. HTH.

both of mine slept on their sides in bed with me

Thanks - I suppose if they are in a sling they are not on their backs either are they. Or when they are being held. Interesting to see if I can find some more info on it - Im not sure why the back is so important apart from suffocation.

I feed my ds on his back when he's in bed with me. I'm on my side, my arm over the top of his head, he's on his back and turns his head towards my boob. Then when he drops off he's on his back. Am I doing it wrong?!

Ds always sleeps on hi side- except for the past week when he has worked out what a clever thing it is to roll and so has ended up on his front. I was not happy about it at first, but as soon as I turn him over he rolls again. He is a chunky little thing and very strong, so I suppose I shouldn't worry, and co sleeping saves my sanity. I had dd in my bed last night as she was so poorly and ds was in the crib by my bed and my word it was an exhausting night!

How old is your DS broccoli? I try to do that but DD is too small and needs a bit more help latching on so we are tummy to tummy both on our sides. Seem to remember feeding DS like you describe when he was older.

Both of mine liked to be on thier side and not flat on thier backs.

I went with the theory that with them next to me I would know if anything unusual happened. They never rooled on to thier tummies until they were much older, even though DD2 could roll herself onto her side almost from birth!

waitingtobloom · 07/10/2008 21:09

DD can nearly roll to her side - but I think its the incentive of a nipple being there...but just..out...of....reach...bit like dangling a chocolate bar in front of us maybe.

I often wake up to these little grunting and wriggling noises as she tries desperately to wiggle towards it lol. Am thinking if she stayed on her side she may just latch on and off and I wouldnt wake up (wishful thinking perhaps at this stage!)

DS has slept on his side since he was born - he was happier that way - HV and MWs said that was fine.

broccoli - I did the 'lying on back with head turned towards me' thing with DD2 but I was told the twisted position could contribute to her colic / wind situation. I started putting her on her side to feed instead and things were much better after that.

ilovemydog · 07/10/2008 21:19

my ds is the same - on side...

amitymama · 07/10/2008 21:53

Yep, on side here.

Snippety · 07/10/2008 23:11

14 months now - on side, on back, kneeling up with his head on my boob, horizontal with head tilted backwards - all over the shop !! When he was tiny it was on his side with his little feet up on my leg
