DS (11 weeks) has gone off the top of the growth charts - what happens now?

Took him to the docs today for something else (he's getting really constipated) and the doc said 'my he's big'. I happened to mention his weight and he paled and asked when he'd last had a HV check.

Three weeks ago as it happens. He's asked me to go back tomorrow to get him properly weighed (he doesn't trust his scales) and if it's what we think it is, he needs to refer him because 'it could be indicative of medical problems'.

But he totally failed to tell me what medical problems and I was trying to calm a screaming baby and tot so didn't get to ask. Anyone got any ideas? DD was always at the very top of but not off the charts for her age.

Oh and DS was born above the height percentile and has grown since so he's definitely a tall baby as well as a heavy one.

Have I bred a rugger bugger by accident?

Well- 20lbs and that height is pretty slim- not so much a heifer as a giant!
As long as he's happy and , that's all that matters.

EachPeachPearMum - yes I have wondered if he could be a giant.

Seriously we have a few people in the family close to seven feet but it skips a generation so my grandfather was and my great great grandfather but not my brothers so, on that score, we are about due for a biggie.

I have no idea what size clothes to buy for him though, I've started putting him in 6-9 month bodysuits and 12-18 month trousers (for the length - they fall down but the alternative look like culottes!) He looks pretty odd though because nothing fits. Except a romper suit from the White Company - so clearly he's going to be an expensive baby if nothing else .

ah- yes- they have footless ones don't they? DD had a couple and they lasted much longer than footed ones, though it is getting cold now.
I've a couple hanging around if you want them, but are white with oink stars on....

EachPeachPearMum · 07/10/2008 23:30

oink???? wtf- pink!

I too have a "big lump of a boy" as my DP calls him! He has jumped up 5 centiles on the weight chart. HV says not to worry about it though.
He's on formula (I had to stop BFing at 2 weeks as I was not producing enough for him. Tried top ups of fromula but being on both did not suit him at all, so switched to formula), and he started on solids at 16 weeks. He's now 21 weeks, and in fairness, it has seemed to even out (ie he has been on the same centile line for 3 weeks now!) Hes thriving on solds. It was a tough decision to start him as I had alwasy wanted to wait til 6 monts (mind you I had also wanted to BF exclusively, but hey ho, that didn't work out)
I think it was just harder for me to accept that I've got a big boy and what you plan for isn't always what happens. But most important is that he's a happy chap.
Try not to worry too much (easier said than done tho, I had the HV driven crazy!) As long as he's happy and developing well in other aspect (ie alertness, awareness of his own hands etc etc)
And also, tbh, don't let clothes sizes worry you. They differ so much between brands! At one point, DS had grown out of dungarees from one shop (aged 3-6 months) whilst one from another shop (0-3 months) still fitted well!

just read my own post....apologies for all typing errors. Defo bed time for me!

Don't panic, my nephew was off the top of the height charts and the weight charts, he was solely breast fed until he was 6 months.
And know .... he is 10 and the shortest kid in his year.

Thanks for the offer eachpeachpearmum but I'm just cutting the feet off 9-12 month suits (which he has tons off and adding socks (and possibly leg warmers depending on exactly how much he grows this week).

wmmc, is there a chance they could have got dates wrong? IIRC you were BFing weren't you and hadn't had a period?
Maybe he wasn't prem and also his growth was restricted due to the P-E and now he is just catching up?
Don't know what else to suggest!
IS he ok in every other way?
Hope you get some answers, either way.

Not really VS - I had a miscarriage the month before we conceived him. So I know my uterus was empty two weeks before we conceived him. There's not a lot of leeway.

He's fine in every other way - in fact he's lovely. He's just started laughing and is very into cuddling all of us which is nice. I don't mind, to me he's just my little giant and that's fine.

Anyway- they couldn't have got it wrong by 6 mo could they?
He sounds fab! (we're having a DS this time too- exactly same conception circumstances!)
