Quick question for BF mums of young babies..

Do your babies always feed from both sides at a feed?

DD2 is the fastest drinker ever - 5/10 mins max, and rarely takes both sides. Feeding about every 4hrs.

If I try to feed her the second side either straight away or half an hour later - she objects very strongly.

Does everyone elses baby BF from both sides? DD1 would feed for up to an hour at a time, so this is taking some getting used to.

Weight all ok - just above 50th centile.

Depends on age and birthweight. Both mine were big boys and went for 2 boobs almost immediately, but took about 20mns to clear each side until about 10wks.

Mine didn't and he's a porker!

smellen · 06/10/2008 19:18

After that about 12mns to clear both. Also didn;t like to change over till ready.

LadyOfWaffle · 06/10/2008 19:18

I feed as long as I can from one side so DS can as much as he can of the hind milk. So, unless it's over an hour I just keep to one side. Most feeds are 10-30 mins so definatly stick to one side. (6 weeks BTW)

DeJaVous · 06/10/2008 19:20

THB it sounds like you're doing a grand job

My DD was exactly the same, power feeder and very definite about one breast being enough, thank you very much mama! (50th centile ish too...)

Shes 10 months now and does take both breasts, but that's relatively recent. Trust you DDs instincts (as you already do), if she's full, she's full.

DeJaVous · 06/10/2008 19:25

LadyOfWaffle - As a tiny baby DD would empty a breast from morning engorgement to totally floppy in 10 minutes fast.

Expressing from one breast at that time of day used to produce about 150mls, so she was definitely getting plenty.

eviz · 06/10/2008 19:47

Ladyofwaffle am impressed at the 'over an hour' suggestion. 15 mins on one side would be a record - today she's had 4 x 5 min feeds from one side.

She's nearly 15wks btw, forgot to mention that.

Dejavous thanks, good to hear it's not unusual.

Oh, at 15 weeks DD was still definitely still on one breast per feed gal. She was very definite about that

waitingtobloom · 06/10/2008 19:56

DD is 4 weeks old and rarely has both sides - and cannot be cajoled! Fast feeder like yours - 5/10 mins max but feeds every hour in the dday and two at night. Born 8 lb 12 oz and has gained a pound each week so far like her brother - who fed in exactly the same way!

She is 91st percentile. I can express 6 oz from one side in about 15 minutes so guess letdown is just very quick and forceful meaning she gets the milk fast that way/

Given up trying to get her to do anything else - shes happy!

Tink never did, only ever one side unless it was during a nurse-in then it was when I needed to move or 30-45 minutes. She could also do a feed in 10 minutes, which worried me at the start when she was 4lb and feeding every 4 hours!

There's another thread on this ("Both sides or one?") running at the moment. Tiktok, who has been posting on mumsnet since forever (or at least several years) and is an expert on all matters breasticle, advocates offering both sides to get your supply up in the early weeks.

deaconblue · 06/10/2008 21:20

dd is a total porker (91st centile despite being born on the 25th) and only feeds from one side and for about 5 - 10 mins except for her last feed of the day when she always wants both sides. She feeds 3 hourly during the day though

Josiepink · 06/10/2008 21:39

My DS only ever fed from one side during a feed. Also, DS was a quick feeder too. As long as they are content and gaining weight don't worry.

BigBadMousey · 06/10/2008 21:50

I very rarely swap sides during a feed. In fact DS often is put back on the same side again at the next feed.
