Ok, I hardly dare to ask, but could someone please explain the term "Militant BF"?

I really don't want to cause a riot, or to offend anyone who was unable to BF for any reason, or anyone who has taken an informed decision to FF, nor do I wish to bash BFers in any way. I am genuinely interested.

I have seen several people describe themselves as "militant BF" in my time on here just don't understand how doing something that is the biological norm can ever/also be militant. Lactivist I get, this I need help with.

Read the thread on Oxfam - it will all become clear....

DeJaVous · 01/10/2008 12:59

Nancy, I don't wish to be rude, but I have read the Oxfam thread and on the basis of that, you are the last person who's opinion on the subject I would respect.

It;s normally used to slate someone who is pro-bf. Along with 'lactivist' and 'bf nazi'.
It's shit.
I'm surprised anyone has calledthemselves it? Has it been tongue-in-cheek?

Nancy66 · 01/10/2008 13:07

Couldn't give a flying fuck to be honest - it's a public forum so you can't pick and choose who replies to your posts.

ps. whose not who's

DeJaVous · 01/10/2008 13:10

Thanks VS.

No, the reason I ask is because of people saying it about themselves, the last time I saw it was on the Oxfam thread but I've seen it several times before too. I don't think it was tongue in cheek...

I've also seen people referring to themselves as lactavists (and even their DPs on occasion). I have been lucky enough not to have come across 'bf nazi'.

Glad we can agree to disagree Nancy

I've said before "I'm a self-confessed 'militant bfer'"
But always in quotes as it's a name someone else has given pro-BFers iyswim.

CountessDracula · 01/10/2008 13:20

TrinityRhino has said she is militant on that thread
today

DeJaVous · 01/10/2008 13:21

So, it's the reclamation of an offensive term, in much the same way as some offensive racist terms are being reclaimed by the black community.

Thanks for that VS. Should have worked it out myself really

Indeed Countess, I didn't want to name names. More bun-fight risk I figured

The word militant is used by lazy people who want to discredit an argument without actually having to think.

Militant feminist, militant tendency in Labour Party etc. All conjour images of dungarees and donkey jackets.

Its just lazy.

VictorianSqualor · 01/10/2008 13:32

Hmm, I just read the thread.
I think TR probably meant it in the way I would have, i.e because I'm very pro-bf and anti things like formula advertising and crap breastfeeding support etc, am active in my role rather than passive then I would be (and have been) labelled as a 'militant bfer' so it's more a name for a type of person rather than an insult anymore if that makes any sense?

DeJaVous · 01/10/2008 13:35

Ah ha. You can add me to the list of militants too then.

DeJaVous · 01/10/2008 13:36

Tandem BF whilst marching, surely?

InTheDollshouse · 01/10/2008 13:48

It's bfeeders who turn up at ffeeders' houses at 5am wearing balaclavas and drag them out of bed shouting "breast is best!"

SoupDragon · 01/10/2008 13:49

Basically the term is a load of b*llocks.
