nope

GentleOtter · 28/09/2008 22:45

My late Mum told me it did not hurt even though I was born with teeth.

cthea · 28/09/2008 22:46

No, not as a matter of course. It hurts when they bite you for whatever reason while BF, but not usually.

funnypeculiar · 28/09/2008 22:47

Them having teeth doesn't hurt. The occasional nip can

MadameCheese · 28/09/2008 22:53

Phew, panic over then

my 17 mo has 12 teeth out and still bf, never felt pain except when she bit on purpose

AnyFuleKno · 28/09/2008 23:13

If you suck your thumb you can feel your teeth but they don't hurt you...it's like that.

thumbwitch · 28/09/2008 23:17

not sure I agree entirely - my DS has 3 teeth, 2 top and 1 bottom, and they are v. sharp - he hasn't bitten me in anger at any point so far but sometimes I can feel them grazing me a little, or nipping as he gets tired and his jaw closes.

Usually changing his position gets him to release and stops the pain. Haven't felt that I can't carry on yet as any pain I get from this is ZERO in comparison to the early days when he had a tongue tie and it felt like he was sucking razor blades through the nipples!

mybabywakesupsinging · 29/09/2008 01:17

ds2 has 7 it is not uncomfortable once he is latched on.
he has never bitten.

anonymxxx · 29/09/2008 03:41

Hmmm. DS (10months) is gnawing on nipple when he is teething. Not very comfortable. But he understands when I complain and sometimes stops (otherwise I stop :-) ). Now, that's completely anecdotal, but I have never heard of girls gnawing?!

cafebistro · 29/09/2008 07:09

My DD has 2 teeth and feeding is fine. She had an initial biting phase when they were coming through but seems to have got out of it now.

FourArms · 29/09/2008 07:13

DS2 is now 2y3m and so has most of his teeth. Agree with most other posters, the teeth don't hurt, unless they bite. However, DS2 could do a pull off without releasing the vacuum that hurts too! Sometimes if he's been latched on wrong, it hurts slightly afterwards, but not much in comparison to the early days!

Having teeth doesn't hurt by itself. In fact, if they have bottom teeth only they can't bite you when properly latched on (as their tongue comes between their teeth and your nipple. However, you may find that (particularly towards the end of a feed) if they lose interest and start to loosen the latch you do get nipped in an experimental "mmm, I wonder what happens if I do this?" sort of way. So IME you need to watch out for that waning of interest and the shift in the latch and take them off then.

SamJamsmum · 29/09/2008 10:08

I have found that when new teeth come through on the top there is sometimes a period of adjustment as they learn a slightly new latch - maybe a week. You can feel the teeth in this time and need to reattach sometimes but it doesn't really hurt. Babies can't compress the breast effectively with a sharp edge of tooth so they learn pretty quickly. My eldest son recently self-weaned at 4 and I was never ever bitten. My daughter who is 10 months has bit me once but as a pp says a baby can't milk the breast with her bottom teeth uncovered so you just have to pay attention for the shift in the jaw which means the tongue has moved. Have the little finger ready to break the latch.

Obvious comment - with the cultural and historical norms of bfing more hours and months are spent bfing babies and toddlers with teeth than without.
