When is the right time to drop the 10pm feed? What signs should I be looking for?

DS2 was bf till 5 months and now ff as going back to work soon. He's also being weaned and on 2 meals a day. He's just turned 6 months and in addition to his 2 meals he takes between 28 and 35oz a day.
He's off the charts for height and on 99th for weight and have been getting advice off GP and HV re weaning early etc...
Wondering when the right time is to drop the 10pm feed as he's now only taking about 4 or 5oz last thing and reluctant to feed most mornings (but not all).
Any advice would be much appreciated.

What is the 10pm feed? his last feed before bed or do you wake him for it? If you wake him, stop immediately - personally I've always been of the opinion you should let them go to bed at bedtime and then let them sleep as long as they like, feeding them only if they wake up.

that way (IMO) they learn to extend their sleep, eventually sleeping through.

They don't wake up for it, that is the right time to stop feeding them.

We dropped it when DS wasn't really wanting milk in the morning, was definitely cross at being got out of bed, and wasn't very interested in milk at 10pm feed.

Well, I am waking him up for it so your advice sounds good to stop it. Thanks all.

I have a son who is just 17 weeks and being BF. I decided 2 days ago to see if he'd sleep through (as I too was waking him at the 10pm sleep and my other 2 were similar ages when they dropped that feed) and he has slept through the last 2 nights, so go for it. The worst that will happen is you have to feed him in the night, or maybe have an early morning, if that happens, although with the weight gain etc it sounds like it probably won't, then just try again in a week or so.
Good luck.

Thanks 3xyummymummy, ds1 dropped his at 22 weeks but seemed a very natural thing to do. With ds2 I'm not quite sure why it feels different, maybe because he's so much bigger. I should just stop questioning it and try it like you say.

The last 2 nights we've taken to dream feeding him rather than waking him and might keep this up for a few more days as he's got a cold and is teething at the moment. If he wakes in the night at the moment at least I know it's because it's one of those 2 things. If I stop the last feed and he wakes, I'll have 3 things to confuse me at stupid o'clock. So, might try when tooth and cold have settled down a bit. Thanks for all the advice mums.
