ok, so ds finally got the hang of this whole breastfeeding lark and has been doing great at it for well over a week now.
until yesterday night. he had a feed at about 10. he usually then wakes at 2 and 6. but i woke up at 3am with boobs feeling like they were about to pop, and not a whisper from him. i eventually woke him to feed him cos i felt so full.
he woke again at 9 and had a big feed and then slept for another 6 hours, when i woke him again for a feed. he fell asleep again and then woke at 9ish for another feed (after another 6 hour sleep).
This time he fed from one side, had a nappy change, and was still hungry for more, rooting around etc but wouldn't feed. I tried him on both sides, but he just kept rooting around, and when he latched on he would have a quick suck and spit it out. he got so upset that I had to get dp to take him away and try and calm him down. after about 2 hours he finally gave in and finished his feed.
last night he slept til 4am. had a nice feed then, but was still difficult to settle.
all his feeds today have been the same... he will have some and then refuse more even though he is obviously still hungry.

do you think he is ill? he has gone from getting into a nice routine of feeding every 4 hours to one where he sleeps for 6 hours (or more) and then is very difficult to feed....
is this normal?

That's terrific, starlover.....you have the proof he is doing fine, and that whatever was bothering him has passed and was not at all serious....ill babies don't gain weight like that

NotQuiteCockney · 25/02/2005 11:53

Thank goodness, starlover! I was worried about your baby. It sounds like it was/is just "one of those things".

Babies and children are excellent at these sorts of tricks - DS1 has twice refused to use a limb for a period of time, resulting in x-rays, consultants, fun fun fun ... with no explanation or fix.

Maybe this is your little one's way of preparing you for this sort of fun?

makes you feel so stupid for worrying though doesn't it?
i was panicking so much yesterday, and now that he is (or seems) to be ok again I wonder why I made such a fuss over it.

Oh, gosh, don't feel badly for worrying. Much better to flap (a bit, now and then) than ignore something serious!

Both times DS1 had paralysis, we went to kid's ER, X-rays, all sorts of appointments, all for nothing. But I'd feel even stupider if it was something serious or treatable (or even understandable!) and I didn't get it checked out.

Starlover, my kids ALWAYS get better as soon as we get to the doctor, however strange their symptoms were!

starlover · 25/02/2005 16:28

apparently i did it too!
when i was little i had a strange lump in my mouth, saw gp who referred me to hospital, saw consultant who said it needed to be removed.
mum got me up on the morning i was due to go into hospital and the lump had gone!

How's your ds now starlover?

starlover · 25/02/2005 22:31

he seems fine now!
has fed every 4 hours today... if not more!

He has been very awake too, I guess that's because he slept so much the last 2 days. I took him out for a nice walk in his pram which he ALWAYS sleeps in but he woke up as soon as we got back!

Still, he seems happy enough. Has fed so much that my boobs hurt though!
