Cow and Gate Comfort milk

Hi,

My little boy has been really struggling when feeding. I've had him on Aptamil 1 since birth and in the beginning he fed with no problems. Recently, he has started screaming during (every time I take the bottle out his month to burp him) and after feeding (no matter how much he has had) and won't settle for ages afterwards. I have tried Infant Gaviscon, which didn't really work. I have just moved over to C&G Comfort milk as I think that part of the problem is that he drinks his milk too quickly which causes wind. My question is how long does it take to see a difference? He has been on it for 2 days and he isn't screaming during and after feeding anymore, however, he seems to be in pain from flatulence and is constantly straining and then crying (he isn't constipated). I am hoping that it is just his body adapting to the new formula.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I am feeling very frustrated!

How old is her, mom2ben?

her = he

My SIL put her colicky dd on C+G Comfort and noticed an immediate improvement. She did fart a lot but SIL felt that the wind was getting out that way IYKWIM, whereas she had retained the wind with the SMA Gold she started out on.

He is 8 weeks.

OK - I asked because very newborn babies change all the time day to day 8 weeks is a little older.

What does HV say?

chipmonkey · 12/09/2008 15:49

I think my SIL's baby would do one big poo a day but just before that she would get a bit unsettled.

lizziemun · 12/09/2008 16:18

DD2 was on SMA gold for 5 weeks and ihad the same as you and i switched to cow & Gate comfort and within a day or 2 she was much better.

Does anybody know if Comfort is lactose free? My baby also screams during feeds (is 10 weeks) but is much better on Colief but with breastfeeding its a bit of a palava so we're now on Aptimil for about 4 feeds...but still doing about 8 feeds in 24hrs as he is often too uncomfortable to finish a feed and therefore not sleeping...aargh! Just wondering whether to try SMA lactose free or Comfort, as not sure if he really is lactose intolerant or just very windy. Wondered if going over to LF milk will make matters worse somehow in long run, or cause other probs. Any advice?! Thanks.

chipmonkey · 12/09/2008 21:39

slummy, the Comfort is not lactose-free but has enzymes in it which break down the lactose AFAIK, making it easier for the baby to digest. I know that it worked wonders for my SIL's dd and also for a friend of hers but I'm not an "expert" so don't want to give you bad advice!

Could it be the teats you are using? I used disposable bottles when I was out and about and the milk came out far too quickly causing a lot of painful wind.

We have same problem, dd now losing weight after 2.5 weeks of it....GP prescribed lactose free formula which has definitely made a difference but she is still only having 2oz per feed before screaming/fussing and she's 10 weeks old so this isn't enough.

Going back to GP on Monday as getting to wits end. It started quite suddenly, although she'd always been windy/colicky she still fed. She's also on infant gaviscon.

We found that Aptimel Easy Digest (sim to c&g comfort) made a difference for 2-3 weeks but then things really went on the slide. It took a good 3-4 days for her to adjust to it though so you may still find it works for you.

HV says if windy a bigger teat is better as they don't have to suck as hard. You will need a bigger teat for comfort formula any way as it's thicker. We moved to variflow teats with the comfort formula that way you can help baby "manage" the feed if you see what i mean.

There's another thread on very similar problem....

Hi and thanks for all the insights. Tried bigger teat but he gagged a bit but may be ready for that soon. Ordered SMA LF in the end but bit concerned its not lactose and is just mad wind..but also don't want to try Comfort if is lactose problem! Oh the dilemmas.. feel like my BF days are over though which is sad. At least we're moving on and trying something else I guess.

Hello after much too-ing and fro-ing to GP he referred us yesterday to a specialist who has diagnosed bad reflux - if your baby is arching his back and screaming that's apparently a sign of acid, not wind....we've got a load of meds plus infant gaviscon and she's the most relaxed she's been since birth...Keeping everything crosse....might be worth a visit to your gp.

Hope that helps and good luck

Hi
My little one is over one month old and has been on breastfeed since her birth. I have tried to combine formula milk(c&g normal and Aptamil normal) but she vomited all the stuff out with bile and become very weak and sleepy after the feed.
please suggest me some good formula milk for her as i dont want to keep experimenting as it is very heart breaking. She is a very happy baby otherwise and ok with BM(with no sickness).
I will appreciate any help !
