Vegetarian ready to drink formula?

frans · 15/08/2008 21:09

I'm occasionally supplementing breastfeeding with formula and want to be able to give my mum and DH ready mixed formula, for ease (plus DH is bamboozled by the need to sterilise bottles and pre-boil water etc!) I gave DD SMA gold yesterday and was appalled to find that only the power is vegetarian, the ready mixed stuff isn't. Has anyone been able to find a vegetarian ready made forumla - all the main brands contain fish oil. Thanks

sorry but as a vegetarian

no idea, could you express and give that instead?

frans · 15/08/2008 21:16

Do express but find it tricky; ideally need ready mixed as a back up e.g. when DD is likely to want two bottles when I'm out for a while

i believe you can make up mixed milk powder / water bottles in advance, search in archives on this topic for more info? i do know that it is the powder which must be heated to a certain temp, not the water.

i never managed any expressing either and didn't go out for first few months. have more than made up for it since

hipp organic is veggie but they only do a ready made follow on currently. how old is your lo?

i also find expressing hard so use that as a back up on the days i work.

most formulas put fish oil in to get those 'closer to breast milk' stuff like omega 3 oil.

The only vegetarian formula milk full stop is Hipp Organic. I wrote to the Vegetarian Society for clarification on this. SMA powder is not vegetarian.

Thanks all. DD is 18 weeks; can only find Hipp ready mixed for 10 months +. Will stick to Hipp powder and a flask of hot water, I think!

gosh thanks for the info

is hipp priced the same as the others?

MERLYPUSS · 17/08/2008 22:09

Hipp is about £1 for 500mls. It comes in a plastic resealable bottle so there is less waste if your DC doesnt drink a whole cardboard carton (normally 200 - 250 mls and unsealable) IYSWIM.
Hipp powder is around £5 a box.

NotAnOtter · 17/08/2008 22:11

thankyou for that - will move dc on to that when stops bfing

Sn0wflake · 17/11/2009 19:36

HIPP is due to stop being vegetarian at the start of 2010, as they're using new ingredients.

If you find this very annoying you could leave a message on the 'contact us' section of the HIPP website, along with asking them if they can recommend a different brand.

If it encourages anyone Mars attempted to stop being vegetarian a couple of years ago and a write in campaign stopped them.

Fishie, just wanted to say that you're wrong about the powder/water thing - it is the water that must be above 70 degrees at the point of hitting the powder, in order to kill the bacteria in it. Formula powder is not sterile. It is possible to make up bottles in advance and in accordance with guidelines, but it should be a last resort and not a matter of course. Ready mix is much safer for very young and vulnerable infants, and much easier for one off feeds like the OP describes. Sorry for the hijack
