EBM - same benefits re breast cancer or not?

Hi I just wondered if anyone knew if the health benefits - reduction of risk of breast cancer - was the same if you were expressing rather than actually bfeeding bubba?

yes. it is the fact that you are lactating, not how the milk gets removed that is important.

I remember the HV that did our BFing class saying it only applied to exclusive BFing not expressing or mixed feeding but I could not understand why. She could not explain the whys either, she just said she knew it was the case.

I will be interested to hear any other responses.

My thoughts would be that it has a connection with the release of hormones? Also a psychological health link?

I think the HV is talking bollocks. The way I have been led to believe, the cancer risk keeps reducing for the longer you breastfeed. I think the studies stopped at bfing at the 2 yr mark. So women who have bf for 2 yrs have lower risk than someone who maybe bf for 6 months. I am sure those women were not bfing exclusively at 2 yrs.

it is only a REDUCTION in risk though, and apparently is is a very small reduction apparently! i've been continuously breastfeeding for five years and was diagnosed in March!!

I thought if you were on the pill it stopped you ovulating so surely there woud be the same benefits being on the pill? Or even being pregnant at all?

It is the production of milk itself rather than how the baby gets it which is important.

Not all women who breastfeed stop ovulating. The link talks about the reduced risk of ovarian cancer when ovulation has been stopped due to feeding.

I guess try some alternatives, the more natural way.
