Hi everyone,

I know one of the other members here from another forum, and she thought this might be of interest to people here - so I'm just going to copy-and-paste what I wrote there! Hope that's OK.

Hope this finds everyone smiling.

I have in my hands a letter which arrived this morning from the Advertising Standards Authority here in the UK, regarding the complaint I made about the Cow & Gate "Complete Care" advertisement featuring babies laughing with comments such as "Do I look like I have a bad tummy?" and so on. Basically the ad was clearly mocking research showing the relative risks of formula feeding as opposed to natural breastmilk.

The letter says that the complaint is ongoing, but that due to a previous ongoing investigation into C&G's health claims in advertisements, this aspect of the complaints would not be looked into. This is because any ruling on their previous claims will "set a precedent for future ads" and will hence sort of be an automatic ruling on the health claims covered in the one I shouted about.

Apparently 53 of us complained, including Baby Milk Action and some healthcare professionals - I thought there'd be far more! Anyway, the points they WILL be investigating are complaints that the ad was (and I quote):

"

  • offensive
  • harmful because it could discourage mothers from breastfeeding
  • A number of other complainants challenged whether the ad made clear that it advertised follow-on formula for babies aged upwards of six months.
"

Anyways, thought I'd update those of you who were also hopping mad at this ridiculously misleading advertisement. I'll let you know (if you ARE interested) when they inform me of the outcome, though apparently both the ASA and C&G are taking legal advice, so this might take some time!

I'd like to make a complaint about it too - is it too late? who do i send it to?

tiggerlovestobounce · 25/07/2008 11:34

I hadnt seen the cow and gate advert before. Shocking if they get away with that

I liked the marmite one though (except the puking). Could completely relate to the look of despair on the womans face when the baby had just puked up what looked like the entire feed.

mamadiva · 25/07/2008 11:34

zwiggy- don't worry about it was just a bit taken a back.

tiktok · 25/07/2008 11:35

mamadiva - getting information based on what friends tell you is as good as anyone can do, because there is no other reliable way of getting information...because this info doesn't exist.

ThingOne · 25/07/2008 11:46

I don't think it's too late Hannah - you could always have seen it on something you have recorded and just watched.

I love the marmite ad. It shows:
breastfeeding as normal,
breastfeeding in the middle of the night as normal,
needing a snack in the middle of the night as breastfeeding as normal, and
that breastfed babies get tastes of food through breastmilk.
And it's funny! I'm sure I looked and felt like that in the middle of the night many times. Especially after having a full feed puked back up.

Hannah81 · 25/07/2008 11:54

i have seen the ad a few weeks ago on tv, so have they stopped airing it now?

Hannah81 · 25/07/2008 12:00

i just looked on youtube for breastfeeding ads - i quite like this one - pity the dont show the on tv here - and this one is good too.

I have to admit, the cow and gate advert would be great if it was for breastfeeding.

mamadiva · 25/07/2008 12:06

This one is never off TV here in Scotland.
here

mamadiva · 25/07/2008 12:11

Do they show BFing ads in rest of UK?

ExterminAitch · 25/07/2008 12:18

i think some of the babies in that ad are pretty ugly too, zwig. and if their mothers are on here... them's the breaks of putting your kid on the stage. (and also 'wtf, don't you have any personal ethics?')

mamadiva · 25/07/2008 12:26

LOL at exterminAitch. Fair point I guess if you put your kid on TV then you will get nasty comments by some.

MrsJamin · 25/07/2008 12:27

that's a fantastic ad, mamadiva, why the hell don't we have ads like that shown on tv in england?! Sometimes the UK is crackers. Why is BFing more encouraged in Scotland, with the legal right to BF and adverts?

Hannah81 · 25/07/2008 12:49

i saw that ad too mamadiva - here in wales i have NEVER seen a bfing ad - yes MrsJ, the uk is crackers - oh shit! I just realised while feeding my LO i wasn't paing attention and the other side just leaked all over me - I'm soaked! And it was possibly the only clean top i had left - doh! must raid DH's wardrobe! lol

mamadiva · 25/07/2008 12:55

Sorry Hannah just burst into a fit of laughter at your misery

There was another one too but I don't couldn't find the other ad. Does anyone know if it's the Scottish Government brought the rules in? I think it must have been as otherwise the Uk would have it. Maybe should start a campaign to Westminster about UK wide rights rather than just parts is unfair.

Hannah81 · 25/07/2008 13:04

yes there was a bfing picnic around many parts of england on monday - i coudn't get to any because i'm in wales, to try to make the law in eng and wales the same as the one in scot. i think they will change the law eventually, but these things take time.

DS2 is still feeding, so am now cold and wet! lol I'm not just talking wet patch either, i'm talking complete soaking, that can be wrung out wet! I can't get any washable pads that keep me dry, i go through 4 disposable pads per feed and even the really expensive tommy tippie ones i need two of per feed, so i've taken to using a towel now if i'm at home!

Hannah81 · 25/07/2008 13:06

the towel obviously slipped as i was typing

mamadiva · 25/07/2008 13:20

LOL Hannah. I never even BF and had to use pads for ages! Was a pain in the arse I must say.

thumbwitch · 25/07/2008 13:33

that marmite ad was hilarious! Far less offensive than the C&G one

noolia · 25/07/2008 13:52

Really that only 53 people complained - after all the discussion we had a few weeks ago - only takes a few mins online.
My reply from the ASA just said that they were investigating the ad already.

Love the marmite ad - I reckon thats the sort of thing that 'normalises' bf. mmmmmm marmite, off for a sarnie now!

Health is a devolved issue, which is why we are getting all this breastfeeding stuff here in Scotland.

They seem to be running a big sensible drinking campaign at the moment with billboards wherever you look. That will be a hard nut to crack though, but they have to start somewhere I guess.

TinkerBellesMum · 25/07/2008 23:43

Not sure about the statement on the Australian ad "it's a mother's right" I think the child's right is far more important.

My choice of formula went like this:

Nurse: "We're going to give her formula until you can start expressing, do you have a preference which brand we use?"
Me (groggy from the GA and in shock at having a baby): "Erm... don't know?"
Nurse: "We've already given her some Premium, is it ok if we just continue to give her that then?"
Me: "I guess so"

And that's what she got whenever she needed () it.

ThingOne, I always slept really well. People would try to tease me about lack of sleep with a new baby, but with her in the bed feeding when she wanted, it was never a problem.

MamaDiva, there are a couple that get used occasionally, but not very often.

mamadiva

Hannah, have you thought about using shells to collect the milk?

WilfSell · 26/07/2008 19:32

I got a reply from the ASA today also, same as the other ones.

It mentions another ad for which the health claims are being investigated which may set a precedent for this one - does anyone know which ad they are talking about?

TinkerBellesMum · 28/07/2008 14:00

They haven't pulled it yet though just saw it between House and Neighbours.

Housemum · 28/07/2008 14:16

SMA sneakily had some on the shelf in Corrie the other day - 3 cartons in blue & yellow that said "Infant Milk" and one carton of SMA!

If you want a good ad for breastfeeding the Queen can see one from her balcony - was in London the other day and showed DD2 Buckingham Palace - there's a big statue outside the gates, Queen Victoria one side, not cultured enough to know who/what the other characters are, but the side facing the Palace is a Greek/Roman type woman breastfeeding a baby - you go, girl!
