Hipp Goodnight Milk Drink

Hi there,

I was just wondering if anyone uses the Hipp Goodnight Milk Drink. This contains extra cereals and I think it makes it a bit more filling....

DS2 6.5 months regulary wakes in the night still and is hungry...he takes enough food and milk during the day so I'm not sure what to do....

This has come from my MIL really - she suggested we put a rusk in his bottle at night as this is what they used to do....think this is too sugary though...

be interested to know if anyone uses this...

thanks

give it a whirl if you like but DON'T put a rusk in the bottle this is a choking hazard!

NormaStanleyFletcher · 23/07/2008 18:31

afaik it just makes the milk harder to digest. If it were me, I would try to get more milk in during the day.

sannie · 23/07/2008 18:32

yeah there is no way I would this...

please don't do the rusk thing

am utterly unconvinced regarding all these things with extra stuff in

i reckon at 6.5 months its perfectly normal to fancy a wee snack in the night

Seona1973 · 23/07/2008 19:57

my ds gave up his night feed of his own accord at 8 months although from 6 months I started to gradually reduce the number of ounces I offered him. The Goodnight milk would be a better option than the rusk as the rusk is full of sugar although there is no guarantee that it will make any difference at all.

Hungrymama · 23/07/2008 20:13

I bought this the other day but haven't used it yet. In Sweden (used to live there) EVERYONE gives their children 'valling' before bed which is a sort of malty enriched milky thing and the children drift away like they're drugged! Okay, so perhaps not every child drifts off but my friend's kids did! I thought the hipp thing might be similar but don't really know the exact formulation of the swedish thing so can't be certain. I'm not sure whether I buy into this 'added extras' thing or not but I don't think a product from a reputable brand like Hipp would be dangerous (like the dreaded rusk) so why not give it a try and see. If your child gets more wind/tummy pain don't use it. If they sleep through blissfully buy it in bulk and enjoy the unbroken night's sleep! That's my two penn'th worth anyway

lulumama · 23/07/2008 20:16

i woudl simply feed him in the night, a regualr bottle of formula.

don;t need any gimmicks like special milk, or rusks, he is a baby, and babies need feeding in the night quite often

you could try to fit in another feed, as milk is the most filling thing you can give , rather than more solids, but if he is taking a feed in the night, he needs it

Hungrymama · 23/07/2008 20:23

Do you still give a 11pm or 10pm ish 'dream feed'?? My DS is 6 mths and has 4oz around 10.30pm which certainly helps. Other feeds are four hourly 6 - 7oz.

sannie · 23/07/2008 20:31

thanks for all the advice....I have tried to give him a dream feed a few times but it's very hit and miss - sometimes he is just in too deep a sleep to take it...guess we haven't found the right balance for him yet...

I'll try to fit in a couple of extra ounzes in and see if it helps

in italy they put a type of "biscuit" in milk. not till weaning age. it's actually based on cereal. has a teeny teeny amount of sugar. but they completely dissolve in milk without making it thicker.packed full of vitamins/minerals.

i've used this type of thing for dd and she has slept thru since from 7.30pm till 7am. very rarely she gets up for a couple of ounzes at 10pm.

i get them from italian grocers. i tried the goodnight stuff. dd preferred the italian ones. they smell gorgeous . like hot cereal/porridge.

LackaDAISYcal · 23/07/2008 20:37

It is certainly harder for them to digest so it would appear that it is more filling.

I would try and either get more milk in him during the day; or carry on with the nightime feed of regular formula.

Rusks in bottles a real NoNo these days; not only a choking hazard, but they are loaded with sugar and would I imagine have the potential to cause tooth problems.

I'm sure your MIL means well though, so maybe a gentle explanation that it isn't recommended these days.

lulumama · 23/07/2008 20:57

i doubt your DD sleeps through because a multi vitamin biscuit is in her milk.. some babies just sleep !

milk is enough for babies, and at weaning age, milk is still the main source of nutrition, and the solid food they get during the day should provide enough vitmains and minerals without the need to add biscuits to the bottle..IMO

sannie, don';t worry too much abotu dream feeds, if he is waking for a feed, feed him then

elmoandella · 23/07/2008 21:01

i think it may also be down to her taking a large feed as she enjoys the taste. keeps her full till morning.

Hungrymama · 23/07/2008 21:21

hmmmm, think you're going to get a lot of conflicting advice on this one as everyone has their own viewpoint (backed up by their own experiences). Go with what your gut instinct tells you and what (when you try it) works for you and your child. Children and parents are all different, one size never fits all. . Hope you find a solution and sleep soon xxx

carrieon · 23/07/2008 21:39

I tried it...it took dd half an hour to drink her bottle (instead of about 5-10mins) and it was such hard work she didn't finish it. Will throw the rest of the box away!

jimmyjammys · 23/07/2008 21:44

Hi - i tried a free sachet I got when DS was about 7 months - he did sleep more then usual. I was still breastfeeding at the time and DS was waking up twice a night at that stage. i couldn't find it in the shops so I bought the Cow and Gate version but this did not work and looked and tasted vile so i went back to the breastfeed at bed time and after a few weeks he slept through of his own accord. i stopped bf around 10 1/2 months. He just began waking again and I found a box of the Hipp today so I am trying it out again tonight to see if it works. DS is nearly 1 now though. Will let you know tomorrow if it worked.

i think it probably is better to get more milk and food into them during the day but some babies will only eat so much and you can't force feed them so if they are still waking and not able to get anymore food into them then you should at least try it to see if it makes a difference for you and if it does work then you should not feel guilty about it and just enjoy the extra sleep you get - it's not like you are drugging them.

jimmyjammys · 23/07/2008 21:48

Carrieon - was the teat on the bottle fast enough? I have to use the Tommee Tippee size 3 ones for it as it's so creamy.

carrieon · 24/07/2008 21:49

It was an avent size 3. And I realised looking in the cupboard that its the Cow&Gate, not Hipp. She sleeps through now on 9oz of cow's milk! I have no idea how/when I'm supposed to cut this back though

jimmyjammys · 24/07/2008 23:43

Well, i tried it again and he kept waking up all night and crying like he had a nightmare or maybe he was in pain? I don't know but tonight I gave him 8oz of ordinary formula and he is sound asleep - so maybe another tin wasted??

Inchka · 12/01/2013 12:00

To reply to the original question, yes we've been using hipp goodnight for a few weeks now. I think it does help little man sleep better, but it's a bit fiddly to feed:

Make sure you're using at least a 3 tip, and make sure it's stirred in well otherwise it would get blocked during the feed.

He's 17 months, and this is his nightly feed before bed.

Hope that helps.

ilovepowerhoop · 12/01/2013 12:09

this thread is 3 years old so he might be sleeping through by now!

At 17 months why not just give him some cereal before bed rather than fiddling about with glorified baby milk.

ilovepowerhoop · 12/01/2013 12:11

god I cant count, its actually nearly 5 years old!
