Because everything I have read seems to say it is. I have mastitis [pathetic, feeling sorry for myself emoticon] and went to the doctor yesterday as soon as I realised what was happening. He prescribed me antibiotics and then said he would give me some ibuprofen. I then asked if it was ok as I was breast feeding, and he said yes, but 'I'll just check if you want' wtf??? So he looked in his little book and then said, ah, best give you something else. It really has me worried as this is the same doctor I saw (not my own incidentally) when I was heavily pregnant and he made exactly the same mistake My problem is that I am now worrying that he is prescribing this to women he shouldn't be (hope that doesn't come across as being a busybody ) If this is not a recommended drug for pg and bf women I really feel I should contact the surgery and suggest everyone has more training on this kind of thing. So who is right? Is ibuprofen safe or not???

Well I was given Nurofen by midwives after giving birth, for my episiotomy, and I was breast feeding, so I bloody well hope it's ok!!

Didn't observe any ill effects in DS but you've got me wondering now...........

I know you shouldn't take it after 30 wks pregnant.

MegBusset · 19/07/2008 21:40

It's fine according to my GP (I have it for knee pain). In fact when you consider that you can get Nurofen For Babies, stands to reason the small amount that would get into BF wouldn't do them any harm.

ButterflyMcQueen · 19/07/2008 21:42

I got given it for afterpains in hospital 5 days ago

littlelamb · 19/07/2008 21:43

That's true MegBusset, I hadn't thought of that. I am just getting confused by the guidelines I guess. I can see that maybe they don't want you dosing up on it willy nilly so maybe with a prescription it is fine. I will go back to being a non busybody now

You can't have it when pregnant but its fine when bf.

PictureThis · 19/07/2008 21:45

It's fine to take when you are breastfeeding

Jojay · 19/07/2008 21:46

Phew - I'm glad the general concensus seems to be that it's ok!!

LackaDAISYcal · 19/07/2008 21:49

It's fine to take ibuprofen, but I would wonder what his little book says as according to my doc, it shouldn't be used in pregnancy, but is OK with Bfing.

drugs info from The Breastfeeding Network

Ah, it's dicloflex that he prescribed me in the end and it says thats OK. Would be interesting to know what he intended to prescribe. Thanks for the link

i hope so, i was given it in combination with paracetamol for afterbirth pains in hospital.

LackaDAISYcal · 19/07/2008 22:01

i had diclofenac (voltarol) after my section, and codeine and paracetomol and was BFing!

Guadalupe · 19/07/2008 22:05

I had ibuprofen for ages after my hysterectomy, I was told it was fine for bf. I always took it when I had mastitis.

expatinscotland · 19/07/2008 22:06

someone on here had surgery whilst pregnant (emergency) and had codeine with no bother - prescribed in hospital.

snookie28 · 19/07/2008 22:25

not sure what the answer is but the pharmacist at boots in oban refused to sell me anything containing ibruprofen when i mentioned i was breastfeeding. he looked it up in his little book and treated me like i had asked for cocaine

islandofsodor · 19/07/2008 22:32

My health visitor a b'f specialist said that ibuprofen was the 'drug of choice' when breastfeeding for mastitus.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 19/07/2008 22:42

I really sympathise- my doctor told me I could only take paracetamol for my migriane when I was pg the first time, it was only when I was in hosp with HG they told me I could take my migraleve pinks, I was soo cross.

I had voltarol, codeine, paracetamol, same as lacks when bfeeding after my sections. gawd saying it like that it's a wonder I didn't rattle!

Wisknit · 20/07/2008 18:10

LC I know recommends ibruprofenr rather than paracetamol in mastitis cases for it's anti inflammatory properties.
Fine as long as not pg.
