Don't know if this has been linked before but isn't the picture in this article lovely?

OP posts:
maidamess · 14/07/2008 13:21

Can we all at least agree that she's not wearing a basque and suspenders?. Good.

RubySlippers · 14/07/2008 13:22

she looks ACE

and the translation made me LOL

she is sexy, but because she is a woman clearly very comfortable with her body, not because she is half naked

VictorianSqualor · 14/07/2008 13:22

Why does it have be seen as looking 'sexy'?
Why not 'womanly'? or 'Beautifully?' or 'Happy in her skin and what she is doing?'

And even looking 'sexy' shouldn't be a problem, sex is not wrong there is nothing wrong with looking attractive to the opposite sex no matter what you're doing.

The 'image' most people will think up when presented with the words 'extended breastfeeding' will be a frumpy looking woman, probably in lots of beige, a cardi, no make-up and possibly a little weird. Like the sort of woman you expect to see with those dolls.

This picture isn't saying BFing is sexy, but that she, a 'sexy', strong woman breastfeeds her children past the 'acceptable' norm of about 6 months.

Actually, DS2 wouldn't let me feed him like that.

He says, "Put a top on, please, Mummy" if I try to feed him eg straight from the shower

PuppyMonkey · 14/07/2008 13:24

Thanks for posting that translation - I've had tears running down my face reading it.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/07/2008 13:25

In the absence of any basis for finding this picture "too sexualised" I'm entitled to make judgements based on opinions put forward on little else other than "its too sexualised". Whatever that really means. I cannot see how a woman feeding her two children naked from the waist up can look too sexualised. It certainly is in the eye of the beholder, is it not? I dont think that's an unfair conclusion to come to.

VS you are right, the interpretation of the picture as with most 'art' is in the eye of the beholder. Nobody is right or wrong,IMO

policywonk · 14/07/2008 13:27

But we've given our reasons VVV, you just don't agree with them. Yes, it's in the eye of the beholder, but that doesn't mean that the beholder's motivation is what you say it is.

VictorianSqualor · 14/07/2008 13:27

Of course it isn't unmediated.
Are any press photos?

Like ib says though, how else could/should she be photographed?

I was in bed yesterday morning, in a silky negligee type thingy (I like silky nighties!) DS2 woke up and wanted feeding, so I fed him, DS1 (who has recently decided he wants to re-try BFing as his baby brother does it) was trying to feed from the other breast, I was lying on my bed.

If I had a photographer there at the time, or even DP with a camera, he would have shot me at the best angle to make the picture look good, maybe asked me to move my legs or my hair, would that suddenly have changed the situation to inappropriate?

OP posts:
maidamess · 14/07/2008 13:28

Sorry, that comment was for VVV not VS. Too many V's!!

Because her legs are "splayed open" (instead of crossed, presumably)?

And because her hair has been styled.

And because she is looking at the camera, instead of gazingly lovingly at both her children at the same time?

Is that the sum total of it?

VictorianSqualor · 14/07/2008 13:30

Lol Fio, no, however I had slumped into ebd with my eyeliner still on the night before so may have looked made-up rather than as natural as this woman does.

OP posts:
meemar · 14/07/2008 13:30

She could have been photographed sitting presumably. Surely people aren't saying that if they want to tandem feed they have to find the nearest bed to do it?

I understand that the photo is more powerful posed as it is, but it is misleading to assert that this is the only way she could have fed both children.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/07/2008 13:31

Yes - art is a personal preference. But folk are saying they dont like it because it is too sexy/provocative.

I cannot see how it can be considered sexy/provocative and the reasons given are, IMO, a bit lame really because they indicate 'ishoos' rather than critique.

would it be provocative if she had a muffin top spilling over her jeans and frizzy hair?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/07/2008 13:34

oh gosh not the only way no.

but, as DS got older, I fed him laying down more than sat up because it was more comfortable, more practical, and was usually first thing in the morning when I didnt really want to have to get up just to feed him

I'd usually be naked from the waist up too because he'd swap sides constantly.

So, seeing a woman laying in a position that I often did (although admittedly I never tandem fed) is just honest, although obv staged for the purpose of.

I actually think the picture is beautiful as a piece of art.

I'm just not sure they've done the campaign much justice though. If the aim is to encourage ebf they've gone about it the wrong way because a lot of women clearly feel uncomfortable about the image.

maidamess · 14/07/2008 13:39

I did not say I did not like the pic becasue it was sexy.
I do not think extended bf is wrong if that is what you want to do.

I feel the pic is posed sexily and I'm not sure why they did it like that..

I apologise if my views on what is considered provocative differ from yours, but wouldn't the world be boring if we all agreed?
