Hi misdee, I have type1 diabetes so this always a possibility for me as well....however with dd nothing was needed, ds however was still slightly low a couple of hours after birth and low temp. He stayed with me the whole time and was feeding, but at that point they asked if I would agree to give him some formula. They provided little glass jars of Aptamil and I gave him some with a tiny feeding cup, not sure he got that much but it seemed to give him enough energy to put a bit more effort into breastfeeding!

So, no idea on formula (although I was happy with Aptamil) but just wanted to say if not dangerously low maybe you could ask to try feeding cup first. For me it was a lot less medical than tube and less likely to interfere with b/f than bottle.

I don't think anyone knows tbh.
There is so little research and info about them out there

How about I send you some ebm

bookthief · 08/07/2008 16:25

Maybe ask your mw about expressing in advance nearer the time? I think it was Hunker who once posted about doing this (or thinking about it).

BronzeNemesis · 08/07/2008 16:27

I know our scbu only had one type of formula available (nutriprem)

FruitfulOfFruit · 08/07/2008 16:31

Hipp organic doesn't have the prebiotics in (thats the immunofortis thingy in Aptamil). Because they can't make organic prebiotics - cos they're synthesised not grown I guess. But I don't remember seeing Hipp organic in the hospital.

Is there a donated breastmilk bank at the hospital? My dss both had donated ebm before I got my supply going.

misdee · 08/07/2008 16:32

have looked into expressing colustrum, but am really not great at expressing (unlike my sister who produces laods each time), and need a back up plan in case expressing doesnt work.

have another GTT in 8 weeks time, a, hoping it stays clear.

misdee - is your sis still breastfeeding? How would you feel about her donating breastmilk in that sort of situation?

I honestly don't know which would be the least messed about with formula - they all have additives in inc. Hipp.

Even if you decided to do something that made staff think you were a total loon ie made your own from ordinary milk (dilute, boil, add sugar - not a recipe, just an indication of what people used to do!), milk itself these days is pretty much a processed product unless you got it straight from an organic cow, of course.

misdee · 08/07/2008 16:48

both sisters still breastfeeding.

how would the hospital cope with that though? their babies will be over a year old when this one arrives.

misdee - the hospital don't need to 'cope'.

If you have donated breastmilk you prefer to use instead of formula, how can they object?

haditfortheday · 08/07/2008 19:30

misdee- unless baby is premature then I doubt you will be eligable for milk from the hospital milkbank. However would approach your sisters to see if they are happy to donate.
The hospital dont have to "cope"- its your choice, dont let them make a decision you aren't happy with or tell you hospital policy states etc- its rubbish and it may not be someting they see everfy day but it is done- speaking from experience of sending milk in for a friend who was desperate.
Good luck

misdee · 08/07/2008 19:32

thank you.

hospital is now baby friendly, so am hoping things have improved slightly since i had dd3 there. if i deveope GD again, i wil lconsider asking my sisters how they fill about donating a few oz's each. i know we wouldnt eligable to use milk from the milk bank, as they need those for preemies.
