Sleeping through, when?

hiya. I know this is going to get many different answers but my DS2 is 5 weeks and still feeding every three hours through the night.
I know this isn't abnormal at all but i'm wondering when everybody started getting close to sleeping through, and any tips to help him get there.
Think i'm questioning more cos DS1 was FF, and slept through at 4 weeks.

It is normal and probably less to do with how they are being fed and more with being different babies.

Make day and night distinction - at night do not talk, change or fuss/engage them,or even look at them too much - do the minimum. I have done this with all of mine (3). Do you have a bath boob bed routine?

Can you BF lying down? You could go back to sleep then.

my dd was formula fed and slept through st 5 1/2 months. DS was also formula fed and slept through at 8 months. It doesnt matter what the method of feeding is as they will sleep through when they have the capabilities to do so i.e. have had enough to eat and can settle themselves to sleep when they go through light sleep.

DS1 - BF - slept through at 6 months (but we did CC with him - I couldn't have coped any longer as he didn't sleep at all)

DS2 - FF - slept through from 3 weeks

DS3 - FF from 4 weeks, - slept through properly from about 7/8 months.

scorpio1 · 07/07/2008 12:28

ds1 - FF - 18 months
ds2 - FF - 5 weeks
dd - BF - 6 weeks

btw.

Who knows when he'll sleep through, but my tips would be:
Do a dreamfeed before you go to bed, to try and avoid him waking just as you've dozed off.
Have a bedtime routine, ie bath, boob, bed, so he knows the score.
Keep all night feeds quiet and as quick as possible. Keep lights dim, don't fiddle with nappies unless you really have to. Get him back ito the cot as soon as you can. Keep interaction to a minimum.
Hopefully that way he'll only wake up because he needs to feed, IYSWIM, not because he wants to play, or anything else. He'll learn that night times are for sleeping, and as he needs to feed less frequently he'll sleep for longer spells.
Don't hold your breath though, 4 weeks is exceptionally young to be going throught eh night so try not to compare them.

not doing well with the routine thing, seem to get to 9 o'clock without realising and then go to bed! he's not doing well at sleeping on his own at mo either so need to sort that i think.

Definatly worse cos DS1 was "contented baby" (gasp) so could set your watch to him by this age. part of me wants A routine again and more intelligent part knows i can't get it so i'm not bothering. Thing the bath, boob, bed thing is good start though.

DD1 FF didn't sleep through until over 2 yrs

DD2 FF slept through from 5/6 weeks.

DD1 drank far more milk (6 x 9oz) a day from an early age, dd2 has never drank more then (4 x 6oz) bottles a day. They sleep through when they are ready. Not that not much help.

DD - 18 months
DS - 3.5 years!!

VictorianSqualor · 07/07/2008 13:27

DD- Not sure, she came home from SCBU ay about 5 weeks and was sleeping through 50/50 by then -FF
DS1 - again, not sure, quite early though, about 3 months? -BF
DS2 - Does an 8 hour stretch most nights -BF(aged 13 weeks)

Do the day/night distinction REALLY important IMO, and a bath, boob, bed routine.

CathyJo · 07/07/2008 15:15

DD - about 10 weeks. I found the more she eats in the daytime and the more regularly she naps the better night times are though am still not sure exactly what sleeping through is as definitions are different - she goes from about 6.30pm to 7am, but has a dreamfeed at 11pm (which I am way too scared to drop !).

rozzyraspberry · 07/07/2008 15:33

ds1 - ff - 5 weeks
ds2 - bf - 5 months
ds3 - bf - 21 weeks old and still feeding 3 hourly in the night (although he missed a feed last night and went from 10 to 4 so fingers crossed)

DS is 22m and is only just showing signs of sleeping through in the near future (please God!). Don't give yourself stress at 5 weeks by worrying about this yet. Your DS could sleep through at 3 months or 3 years and in my opinion there is only so much you can do about it.

Knakard · 07/07/2008 20:15

7months and still waiting for it!!

katpotat · 07/07/2008 20:18

14 months!! Was still feeding through the night at 13 months too, ended up doing CC in the end. You get used to getting up though

tassisssss · 07/07/2008 20:20

both mine were 8 months before they "slpet through" which I took to mean 7-7

dd2 is also nearly 5 weeks and also feeds 3-4 hourly through the night

all 3 exclusively breast fed.

how're you coping? it's tiring, isn't it? try to rest when you can.

MummyAnnabella · 07/07/2008 20:39

5 months bf exclusively till then when i introduced one ff at bedtime. dont know if connected but was happy with that!

mumoftoby · 07/07/2008 21:20

I have breastfed both of mine. Toby slept through at 5 and a half months (2 weeks after I stopped breastfeeding). Blake is 6 weeks and up once in the night but I wake him at 11 pm and give him a formula feed.
I have introduced a formula feed for Blake mainly because I can't face the 2 hourly routine I did with Toby when I have a newbie and a tot to look after each day!

EffiePerine · 07/07/2008 21:22

DS - 15 months. He is a tough case though

oh and 'sleeping through' for a baby is actually 5 hours at a time, so you're not far off
