hi ladies, been quite a while since I was up to date with breastfeeding stuff so thought I'd ask for some advice on here for sil. She really didn't want to feed, but something kicked in at birth and she is doing fantastically, however she has had some latching problems (resolved now) and consequently has cracked nipples and is finding feeding very painful. So what helps in this situation she is determined to carry on but is very clearly in alot of pain.

Also she just said he has been sick and it has a slight brown tinge to it, am thinking this is probably mucus anyone have any experience of this, he is three days old TIA

Hello Quadders!!

If the latch issues are sorted now then she needs to get some Lansinoh (or similar) to help with the cracked nipples. I would agree with you re the mucus - hopefully someone more experienced than me will come along.

I think she can take paracetamol if she's in a lot of pain.

Does she know about the Baby Cafe? It meets on a Friday morning at the Quaker's Meeting house up that road which runs up by M&S. The ladies there are fabulous beyond words!!

I bet the kids are thrilled to have a new cousin?

Breast milk on the nipple is good for healing
Cabbage leaves in bra is v good for pain (Savoy - the crinkly one) use straight out of the fridge for maximum relief....

Quadrophenia · 02/07/2008 17:35

ello, ello...yep the kids are really chuffed, i was at the birth it was amazing...am still recovering from the lack of sleep and all the emotion

I will let her know about the breastfeeding cafe, so far she has received some pretty hit and miss advice so i have helped as best i can but tbh its been a while and I just don't feel as in the know anymore!!

will let her know about the lansinoh, is that simliar to kamillosan?

brown tinge could be blood from cracked nipples

air to nipples as much as possible, lansinoh and make sure latch is ok.

was there any meconium in the waters? i am sure DD swallowed loads, but did not breathe it in, as she vomited brown gunk 24 hours after birth and i had mec.stained liquor. did you love being at the birth?

lulumama · 02/07/2008 17:39

DON'T do nipple shields unless dire circs. as can be really hard to get baby to learn to latch without them... attachment and positiong the key and get nipples healed

thought savoy cabbage was for engorgement rather than nipple pain

some MNers recommend silverette for cracked nipples IIRC

PertweeAndLemon · 02/07/2008 17:42

Brown tinge is likely to be blood from her cracked nipples (nice...) so nothing to worry about in and of itself.

Quadrophenia · 02/07/2008 17:49

have just passed on and she feels reassured thanks people, it was mentioned that he was mucusy at birth, not shure if meconium was in waters as they were still intact at 10 cms and were ruptured by midwife, nothing was mentioned at the time.

the birth was amazing and was a fantastic privilidge to be there, she had a natural birth, almost 24 hours of contracting every 3 minutes to get to 5 cm then went from 5 to 10 in less than two hours. saw seven midwives in total, one who saw her when she was having a bit of an emotional wobble had the cheek to tell her she was a candidate for an epidural felt like punching her in the face but held back. Oh and she laboured on gas and air for 4 hours when it wasn't actually working

Hiya - not missing Northampton at all but really missing the people! Did you hear my crazy news (6 weeks' pg!)

I would definitely recommend the Baby Cafe. If she feels she's not getting accurate advice from her Mw or HV then there are at 2 trained BFC there (one LLL one NCT) and they make you a cup of coffee/tea and they often have quite delicious biscuits! I found it invaluable in the early days and often used to pop back even when ds was older, just to chat and meet other mums.

theSuburbanDryad · 02/07/2008 17:51

That sounds about right for NGH, tbh.

Quadrophenia · 02/07/2008 17:52

oh wow big congrats you must be pleased as punch
lets face it the best thing about northampton is the people

if she had quick second stage then might not have been 'squeezed; enough to get all gunk out of lungs...sounds a bit ick, but not too bad, at least you were there! great stuff

theSuburbanDryad · 02/07/2008 17:54

Oh yes - especially your neighbours!

We were back the other week and i saw G driving the van. I was going to wave but thought he might assume i was a random lunatic!

Anyway - big congratulations, we'll have to get together sometime. Do you still go on FB?

Quadrophenia · 02/07/2008 18:04

yep am still on facebook, am addicted to some game on there at the moment, you'll have to let me know when your next in town, do you get back much?

thanks Lulu
