Slings to breastfeed in?

Does anyone have experiences of breastfeeding in a sling? What type/make? And would it come in a size big enough to accommodate a 38H bust (that would be at least 45 or 46 inches across)? Could you feed one handed (or no hands)?

Many thanks for the reply. My baby is only 5 weeks and I think too little for the podaegi, having looked at the ellaroo website. Would be v interested in other suggestions though (I find slings rather confusing. We have a Babybjorn that Junior is just big enough to fit into, but I don't think I could breastfeed v easily in it. As for fabric slings and wraps, I also worry about the fabric coming undone, but would appreciate any tips/advice etc. Junior likes being carried around a lot, and a HV has suggested he might like to be in a sling, hence the query).

Maybe a Mei tai or an Ergo sling? I've seen photos of women bfing in those slings, but I never managed to learn the trick myself!

RoRoMommy · 01/07/2008 14:37

i use my ergo, but ds is much older than yours - 15 months!

TinkerbellesMum · 01/07/2008 14:53

I make my own wraps and used to be able to walk with her attached, no one ever knew what I was doing. I'm 34 H btw, was bigger at the time. Never had a problem with them coming undone and I've never really been that strict with doing them up tight.

freakypenguin · 01/07/2008 14:58

I've got one of these from the company Big Mama slings, and highly recommend it for breastfeeding (and general carrying!).

The prices are pretty competitive and there is no added P&P.

ChairmumMiaow · 01/07/2008 16:12

I had trouble with my wrap sling, but could just about manage. Bought a padded ring sling when DS was nearly 4 monthsand found that so much easier!

mum2oandh · 01/07/2008 16:22

i bf no handed really easily in my maya wrap (from big mama slings or little possums) have done it since the day dd was born, and still do (at 4 mo) bf my ds at 14 mo in a tricotti sling (also available at the above) whilst walking round chatsworth house, and nobody knew.....

mum2oandh · 01/07/2008 16:23

oh and my boobs are a 38E...

LavenderMist · 01/07/2008 16:30

All you who feed in wrap slings -how on earth do you do it? We've just switched from a stretchy wrap to an Ergo and I have to say I NEVER managed to work out how to feed in the wrap. It would have made my life a whole lot easier if I could. Any tips for next time?

TinkerbellesMum · 01/07/2008 17:00

Try this it gives diagrams to breastfeeding in a wrap.

You can also do it by loosening it slightly and tilting your baby towards your breast then tighten it up again. It's best to work it out while you are sitting down before doing it while out.

LavenderMist · 01/07/2008 19:26

Brilliant, thanks! Now maybe I should get that Didymos I was coveting after all...

TheProvincialLady · 01/07/2008 19:30

Is it possible to feed a newborn in an ergo? I have one that I have been using for my 22m DS and I am going to buy a newborn insert as I am pg with number two. I don't really want to buy another sling if I can help it.

Sorry for the hijack!

ib · 01/07/2008 19:35

I found a ring sling best.

PL no it's not impossible, I've done it but it's not as comfortable as with a ring sling.

Oh, and do try the newborn insert thing before deciding to spend money on that rather than another sling (I hated it).

TheProvincialLady · 01/07/2008 19:38

Ah that's good advice thanks. My friend has one her son has outgrown (wrong colour though) so I will give it a try.

I tried a ring sling with Ds and could not get on with it at all. Too much fabric (I am 5'2" and size 6) and Ds kept nearly falling out of it. In the end I was using at least one hand to keep him in, which seemed a bit pointless and still not very safe! But maybe I am just rubbish. I am a bit cack handed at times.

ib · 01/07/2008 19:42

LOL, I can see that happening with some ring slings. I had one of those that has a buckle so only had to adjust it once.

Just curious (don't often come across people who are smaller than me!) which version ergo do you have, the old or the new generation?

TheProvincialLady · 01/07/2008 19:43

The new one I think. I bought it about 8 months ago.

ChirpyGirl · 01/07/2008 19:43

I have fed in a wrap by having the pouch/horizontal bit on the inside and lying them down in it. IN fact when DD2 was small I spent the first few weeks topless with just a bra and wrap on (trust me, I needed the bra).

If I am out though I usually use my Ring sling to feed in and put her head on the side away from the rings. I position her while standing or sitting and tighten the sling around her.

Another tip is to always wear a £2 tesco/asda vest underneath your carrier in teh same colour as your top, or 2 vests, and pull the lower one down. that way no bare cold belly as you walk around!

ib · 01/07/2008 19:50

Do you not find the straps are a bit too long?

(sorry cn, promise to stop hijacking now)

TinkerbellesMum · 01/07/2008 20:01

I always have the horizontal on the inside, I find it a lot easier to tie and tighten when I need to. I have a sari that I sometimes use in the nice weather (is probably put away now till next summer for new baby) and have to have the cross rails on the inside or it doesn't feel safe, but the rest are always outside. I've shown others how to do it like that and they've much preferred it.

ib if you mean me, all the straps are on their smallest setting but that is okay. But my DS has always been quite tall and maybe that makes a difference? (Sorry OP)

SamJamsmum · 02/07/2008 07:16

I love my maya ring sling. I am a 36K at the moment and seem to manage. If you visit www.thebabywearer.com you can read tons of reviews and look at the message board.

sallyforth · 02/07/2008 11:17

personally have found ring sling to be easiest for bf, but bf in a wrap can be hands free so worth practising.
