Does anybody microwave their baby's bottles?

I have just recently acquired a microwave. Some of my friends heat their baby's milk in a microwave. I've not done it and wondered if there is any reason why not, other than hot spots (which could be eliminated by stirring well)? My dd is 9 months old and if there is nothing wrong with it I am thinking of doing this as 1 minute is preferable to 7 in a bottle warmer.

I used to do it. Just make sure you give the bottle a good shake before giving it to the baby. As far as I know, that's the only reason why people say you shouldn't.

There are a lot of warnings about things which are basically aimed at the terminally stupid.

TheBlonde · 30/06/2008 18:30

yep quick and easy

TwoToTango · 30/06/2008 18:32

Yes I did - like others just shook it really well.

LilRedWG · 30/06/2008 18:33

Yep - 45 seconds does it nicely!

LittleMissNorty · 30/06/2008 18:34

done it after the first 2 weeks

Shake well

OK, hopefully someone who knows more about this than me will be able to give you some advice here but I seem to remember that if you are using plastic bottles then you shouldn't heat them in the microwave because there is a chemical (bisphenol???) in plastic that leaches into the milk if the bottle is microwaved as the microwave de-stabalises the plastic. Maybe I'm making this up, or it's one of those ridiculous health scares, I just seem to remember reading it somewhere...... Ok if the bottles are glass or B-free though.

mosschops30 · 30/06/2008 18:40

god yes have done it for the last 3 yrs with ds

serant · 30/06/2008 18:40

ok for formula ,not for breast milk though.

TheBlonde · 30/06/2008 18:42

why is it not ok to microwave BM?

flubdub · 30/06/2008 20:15

no, not bm, it kills of the 'good' stuff. thats why you shouldnt shake it too, judt 'swirl' it round.

MindingMum · 30/06/2008 20:19

Did it with all 5 of mine

MuffinMclay · 30/06/2008 20:22

No, never have. I make them up as I need them (and cool them down) or use little cartons.

EyeballsintheSky · 30/06/2008 20:32

Yep, since the day she came home. As long as you give them a good shake they'll be fine.

Everyone who makes them up and cools down all in one go, do your dcs not scream the house down? DD would explode if I tried to make her wait that long! Genuinely interested, not being sarky btw.

i make them up with half cooled water then when i need them i noil fresh water and fill to level then add powder and is ready straight away (you get used to the right amounts of water to make it the right temp)

If I was out with where there was no kettle i would use a microwave tho.

Annabellemary · 02/07/2008 20:53

Great, thanks for all of your help, I can't make them up as I go along as mine is a little screamer when hungry and sometimes feeds at unpredictable times - she sometimes wants her second bottle at 9am or sometimes midday and when she wants it she wants it.

I use the plastic Dr Browns bottles and removed the inserts etc, before trying the microwave but will see if I can find more info regarding the bisphenol chemical or whatever it is.

Thank you x

Just found this quote - will look for more info:

'Bisphenol A is a chemical used in 9 out of 10 bottles and it's carcinogen. Here the Food Standards Agency say the amounts leached into milk are too small to have any affect but it's being banned in Canada and big companies in America like Walmart are taking bottles containing Bisphenol A or BPA off the shelves.'

Hi Anna,

I would really recommend ready make cartons, my dd always takes them room temperature and no worries about the milk going off etc I have fed my daugther purely on cartons -for convenience and concerns about milk being kep sterile.

MuffinMclay · 02/07/2008 21:22

Eyeballs - no, ds2 never screams the house down (did once in a traffic jam when a feed was long overdue and there was no way of giving one to him).
He is a creature of habit and has his bottles at roughly the same time every day. He always takes a whole bottle, but never seems to demand them. I know that makes things a lot easier.
