A friend asked me today if the fact that her period has come back means her 'milk is drying up'?

I said no it didn't, so long as she goes on bfeding there will be milk. She has 3mo twins and is mixed feeding.

But now I'm wondering if the hormonal changes that prompt the return of one's period might not also provoke changes in the amount of milk produced?

Can anyone enlighten me?

Nah.

My periods returned 3 months after birth, still bf 2 yrs later.

There was a thread about this a while ago and a number of posters said that when they had their period their babies had tended to fuss at the breast a bit more.

So I guess it is possible that the hormones have some sort of impact (maybe on the speed of let-down or something).

But it is definitely true that having her period will not make her milk dry up.

no it's fine. I got periods back at about 7 weeks pp both times and my milk hasn't dried up.

some people do find their supply dips a little around their period, so babies may want to feed more often.
but the milk won't dry up

Mine didnt come back till more than a year and a half after births. Had stopped feeding DD1 a couple of months previously and was still feeding DD2 at 21 m.
I think it's one of those things that varies greatly from one woman to the next isn't it...

Thanks all, just worried I was giving her the wrong, or incomplete, advice!
