I walked , then walked and walked some more !! Poor parents - it is shattering.

Different things work for different babies for me it was Colief drops, Dr Browns bottles and Omnicomfort milk.

Congratulations to them

Your poor friend . Both mine had colic and it was incredibly stressful at an already tiring and emotional time.

Apart from all the usual things you'll find in books the following helped us:

walking outside in the fresh air - did many, many lengths of the garden.

my DH would put DS across his lap on his tummy and just keep rubbing his back, he would sometimes go off to sleep like this.

I put MTV Dance channel on v loud in living room, clutched DD tightly to me and just danced like a loon to the beat - I think the movement and noise just completely overwhelmed her senses and she would go completely silent (I consoled myself with the thought that I was also shifting some baby weight at the same time!)

The other thing is for your friend to do regular swaps with DH/DP if he is around as listening to the crying constantly is just so stressful and quite often I think it bothers mums more than dads (I have always found our DC's crying has bothered me much more than it does DH). When your friend gets a break, I would suggest going out for a walk or going up to bed with ear plugs in to block out the sound.

I hope things get better for your friend. It might pass quicker than 12 wks, I think both of mine were improving a lot by 8 wks but even that would have been a daunting prospect at the beginning.

My ds had colic, I took him to a cranial ostryepath which was £30 per session..

My mum and partner it was a stupid idea and his colic was so bad that it took 2 sessions before I saw any improvement atall then ha another 2 as he was not completly cured.. It is expensive but it really did help..

Also I found the best way to carry him was on my hip facing outwards, with his arms hooked over my arm. people looked at me like i was mad and not holding him correctly but if i held him any other way he screamed..

I think it is important to hold him upright as much as possible.

Also bolied water in a bottle, colled down but keep it as warm as is safe for a baby, that got alot of burps from ds when nothing else would...

Yes, definitely worth trying cranial osteopathy. I did with both DC's - the results with DD were dramatic (big difference after only 1 visit) but didn't help DS.

My DH was also a big sceptic about the idea but there was no denying that it really helped DD. I could never get her to burp before the appointment but straight away after the treatment we got a big wet burp.

Oh, and Infacol drops helped with DS.
