Do bottle fed babies tend to have a dummy more than breastfed babies?

Im just wondering really.
Im a fan of dummies, babies like them, and are comforted by them, as long as they arnt running around with them in their mouths for years, I think theyre a good thing.
Anyway, do bf babies just go on the breast for comfort instead of a dummy? Obviously ff babies cant do this.

my DD was bottlefed and had no dummy as she hated it, however she did use her bottles as a comfort.

DS1 - bottle fed and didn't have dummy - did use the bottle as comfort
DS2 - breastfed - no dummy but sucks his thumb
DS3 - still breastfed at 16m - loves his dummy

so no pattern there at all!

ds bf and ff , no dummy , no thumb sucking

PortAndLemon · 27/06/2008 12:23

Neither of my bf babies would take a dummy (and I've worked my way through a whole range of types). My mother found the same with us -- the three who were bf refused dummies, while the one who was ff took one happily.

dd1 bf and dummy, religiously and ecstatically
ds1 bf refused dummy (but also point balnk refused bottles, so no surprise)
dd2 no suck, so used a dummy to try to stimulate reflex, eventually bottle fed - wouldn't take a dummy.
can't see a pattern

ds1 ff refused dummy and thumb sucked from around 5 months

ds2 mix fed, refused dummy thumb sucked fro 10ish weeks

ds3 bf has a dummy as he is a comfort sucker (and would feed to sleep otherwise!) and he is finding his thumb now (16 weeks)

DD FF refused dummy until 6 months old when her aunt gave her one..
DS1 BF loved his dummy, had it til he was 2.
DS2 BF doesn't really like it, has taken to it more lately since he has learnt how to use a bottle but he prefers to chew his hands (10 weeks)

My bf baby has had a dummy since he was 3 days old . Not something that is recommended btw, but it worked for me as I'm still bfing 6 month on. My friend's baby on the other hand is ff and won't take a dummy!
Apparently babies who have dummies are more likely to be weaned earlier, but I only started to wean ds when he was just over 23 weeks. Again my friend weaned her ds earlier (18 weeks).
I guess there must be other factors involved.

I think lots of parents don't always realise their child is bored, even small alert babies can get bored.Consequently they get given a dummy to stop the crying and they suck through boredom. I think if they were more stimulated they probably wouldn't want to suck so much. Call it distraction. Just my thoughts and not saying its always true.

dont know but
Ds was BF for 3wks then FF and had a dummy until 3mths old
DD1 FF and had dummy until 18mths then I took it off her.
DD2 FF refused dummy from 2wks old she spat it out all the time.

claireybee · 27/06/2008 15:45

DD mix fed, had a dummy from about 2 weeks old

DS breastfed, had a dummy from 7 weeks ish-would NOT use the breast for comfort and was (is) a screamer.

DD is now 2 and would have her dummy all day if I let her (she only has it for sleeping). DS will only take his for 2 mins or so before he falls asleep and spits it out as soon as he is asleep.

HaventSleptForAYear · 27/06/2008 20:47

DS1 took a dummy when I gave up bf him (around a year!). He stole it and slept better with it, so we bought some more (previously anti and just fed him to sleep so didn't need one).

DS2 we "forced" to take a dummy to stop the reflux cycle (eat/suck, sore tummy, comfort suck - sorer tummy from more milk).

He loves it now. Still bf at 18mths.

I thought it was nice for a bf baby used to comfort sucking to have that comfort at the childminder's when no breast was available.

I was breastfed and sucked a dummy until I was old enough to be embarrassed about it when friends found out, and to make excuses - 3yrs +. My dd is ff and getting on for 2 and I cut a lot of deals with her - dummies are for bed, etc - but if anything the habit is getting worse. Hope she will be reasoned with sooner rather than later. Still, I had no bad effects from at least 3 years of it, so I don't worry about those - just the embarrassment of having a great big kid with a dummy in her face. Anyway, can't see link between bf/ff and dummy from very narrow personal experience - but maybe genetic one!
