Too much milk - help

I'm like a show cow here. Baby is 9 days old and a great feeder (latches nicely) but tends to sick up because there's rather a lot.
Boobs permanently getting hard and painful and seeping and dripping.

So, help please. 1. When will this seepage stop?

  1. Should I express, and if yes, will this cause oversupply?
  2. DS is feeding every 3 hours which is dead tiring for me, but also a relief with the boobs.
  3. How about alternating boobs? Left boob is bigger and more full than the right, and I try to alternate but I need to do both at once.

Really struggling with this feeding, which is ironic given that I could be a wetnurse in a previous life. In despair with it, despite it all going 'extremely well' according to mw.

Please, nobody offer me another baby, although I could feed one!

I used to feed one side then change nappy then feed other side. That worked. You can always express a little if its really bad and freeze it, if you don't do it regularly it shouldn't cause oversupply.

have you thought about donating to your local milk bank?

Essie3 · 25/06/2008 19:51

Starlight yes, all is well with DS - we've spent 2 awful days in hospital where, due to a total lack of communication, he was given gaviscon and we were warned that he had an underdeveloped oesophagus etc. There's nothing wrong with him, he's just overdoing it because my supply is quite strong. Oh, and he's gained weight since birth (he was 40+4 but small, 6.1) and even gained at hospital despite being sick. Nappies - both ends - ok.

If I offer one side, the other becomes hard and drips...

I smell as well - laundry monster! Currently on 2 breast pads to keep things under control.

it will slow down i think and adjust to your baby's needs, i had loads of milk too but now not much which means he feeds alot more than every three hours at 4 mths. Lots of breast pads and nighties for you.

I used to lie back for feeding so that it didn't flow too fast and lo could pull away when he gets too big a mouthful
