Help! Why is it suddenly so painful feeding my 14m old?

After the initial pain establishing feeding dd2, things have been great. She is now 14 months and still going strong, but for the last month or so both my nipples have been agony. I've had her checked for thrush, but there was no sign. It almost feels like I have a newborn again as the ends of my nips look a little blistered from all the sucking.
She does feed quite alot for her age I suppose, but this hasn't changed so I don't know why the pain.
Any suggestions would be very welcome as I really don't want to stop until she's ready but it really is getting unbearable...

teeth?

bobblehead · 25/06/2008 18:21

Could be, although she's had them for months...
Would that cause ends to blister/bleed though? Anything I can do to stop it?

I don't know to be honest - but they do start to get molars in the back that you don't always see. And when they're teething their saliva is more acidic - which could explain why you're sore.

sorry not to be more helpful.

I went through this with my 14month old and after a while it passed, not sure what it was, I tried all sorts of positions etc it almost felt as if he was trying to feed whilst at the same time pulling off, felt like I had to hold his head near my boob cos he was yanking at it so much! I think it was teething and it may have been hurting his gums? anyway it passed.

She might have become lazy with her latch. Check that it's okay - especially after teeth coming through.

Get checked for thrush etc anyway by going to the GP (ignore any comments re why you are "still" b/feeding from GP whilst there).

I bet she's grown, and the position you hold her in is no longer thr right one to have her mouth in the correct position. I had the same problem with ds1 at about 13 months and had to try different feeding positions until I got comfy!

Have your periods come back yet? Could you be pregnant?

bobblehead · 26/06/2008 02:57

Thanks everyone.

Dd's molars are almost in so it could well be to do with teething. She also does seem to pull away like you said iMum, stretching me with it!

Haven't had a period yet, but did wonder if perhaps I'm more sensitive due to hormonal changes of that happening soon (pretty sure I'm not pg).

Going to Drs Monday anyway as I now have a lump in my breast which I think is a blocked duct but will get checked just to be on safe side.

I was going to suggest that you might be pregnant. I had to stop feeding ds at around 13-14 months when I became pregnant with dd, because it became too painful.
