Am I right in thinking that a bedtime feed of 370ml is slightly excessive?

Last night my 16 week DS surpassed himself by necking his normal feed of 210ml and then having another 160ml to follow as he was still hungry. It should be noted that he had also had a 250ml feed between 2 and 3pm, only several hours before.

He will usually have over a litre of formula a day and weighs approx 17lb. He sucks his fists a lot and shows great interest in our food. I know it's too early to wean him but I can't increase his milk amounts by much more, can I?

popsycal · 23/06/2008 12:58

20ml is around an ounce
ish

LilRedWG · 23/06/2008 12:58

popsycal · 23/06/2008 12:58

i think
am sure 60ml is about 3oz

breastfed babies tank up from early evening to night ..so from around 5pm - 10pm ... so that they can start to last through the night

feed a baby till it's full

that's the only common sense approach to feeding a baby .. nothing is wrong / excessive or unnatural

LilRedWG · 23/06/2008 12:59

Can you give him formula for hungrier babies?

MamaFormerlyKnownAsGlam · 23/06/2008 12:59

12.5 oz approx, sorry!!

dd2 was on 8oz big bottles 6-8 times a day at this age. sometimes more sometimes less.

feed them milk when hungrey is my rule

TheProvincialLady · 23/06/2008 13:00

How long is it between his bedtime feed and his next feed? It could be that he is storing it up for the night to keep him going. If he isn't bringing it up again and it isn't making him scream with pain having his tummy that full, then I would incline to trust his appetite as he is the expert!

is 16 weeks a growth spurt period?

MamaFormerlyKnownAsGlam · 23/06/2008 13:01

He does sleep from 6.30 to 6am so I guess he is just filling up. I breastfed my DD but unfortunately was unable to feed DS myself so I suppose I'm just shocked at the amount that I can see him taking.

6.30pm, that should say.

I tried the formula for hungry babies but it just made him constipated.

210 is about 8fl ozs
160 is about 6fl ozs

My falrey's tin recommends 200ml 5 feeds a day, but this is just a guide; some babaies will need more, and some a bit less.

Also bear in mind that they go through a bit of a growth spurt around this age, so I'd just go with the extra milk feeds and it ahould settle down in a few days

dilbertina · 23/06/2008 13:04

I think I would try upping the number of feeds during the afternoon.

lackaDAISYcal · 23/06/2008 13:05

apologies for awful spelling

MamaFormerlyKnownAsGlam · 23/06/2008 13:06

Thank you all. I have always fed him on demand and would never give him less or more than he demonstrates that he needs. Both me and DP have enormous healthy appetites though so I guess he's just inherited the glutton gene

If he sleeps 12 hours a night at 16 weeks you can completely understand why he would need to tank up beforehand.

I think you are doing the right think re demand feeding. I had to give my DS EBM as he wouldn't BF direct and I did the same. He would often have massive amounts one day and much less the next, but I figured that if he was BF I wouldn't have known. Babies know their own appetites.

My little one (just shy of 1 months admittedly) has polished off two nine ounce bottles, breakfast and a sneaky malted milk biscuit since eight thirty. They'll let you know when they're full
