Five month old reflux worsening on Nutramigen, would omeprazole help?

My 5 month old has silent reflux and we have tried nearly everything except for medication. He has been on HIPP organic milk since birth and he has always drank it well, no large side effects except for reflux. We thought it was something that would get better with time but it’s gotten worse. We have tried carobel and it worked for a while then gave him bad wind and tummy pain so we took him off.

Attended GP & they prescribe Nutramigen for possible CMPA. Day 4 of this and I can’t lay him down without him crying. He is having 3-4 explosive nappies a day. He is generally happy through the day but nights are awful he doesn’t sleep more than a couple hours. Google tells me the reflux is worse because of the Nutramigen formula being thin. Prescribed gaviscon but internet tells me I shouldn’t be giving him it when he has diahorrea.

My last resort would be trying omeprazole. It feels so late to be starting this as he has generally tolerated cows milk for so long and I’m not sure if it’s more reflux that is our issue. Would omeprazole help? He arches his back and is in pain when the milk is coming up and the milk is making this worse. He also is drinking a little bit less than normal as he is aware the taste is different. He always drank his bottles so well on HIPP, we struggled as it would take hours to burp him and he would resist due to the reflux.

I’m tempted to try him back on HIPP again but worried we’ll go backwards, just not sure what to do anymore. Suffering a lot with PPA and getting therapy but all this is really escalating and making me worse. I feel like we try one thing and it doesn’t work so just searching for answers constantly.

So from my experience, if it is CMPA. - you need to get this sorted and the reflux will in turn become easier to manage.

Nutramigen still has some cows milk protein in, I would speak to GP about the symptoms being exacerbated and request neocate formula which has zero cows milk protein. Then give that a try for at least 2 weeks!

that was very much our route, sort the CMPA - the reflux became easier to manage! X

I’m so sorry OP, I’ve been there and it was awful. I 100% agree with @FunnyHazelPeer – get the fully CMP-free formula and give it 2 weeks (and expect it to rake a while for him to drink it happily). It is so so hard. But once it’s sorted it will be like having a different baby.
