2 week old being sick- is he taking too much milk?

For two days in a row now ds has been sick at about 7 pm He is on the breast a lot during the day, but is only being sick in the evening, after he has been fed and is generally a bit unsettled. He is bringing up quite a lot, but afterwards will happily feed again and go down to sleep. Is he just taking too much? I thought that perhaps he might be drinking too quickly or that I had too much milk, so that when he has already fed and been sick, the milk wouldn't flow quite so fast? He is managing really well with feeding, but this has thrown me a bit, though it doesn't really seem to bother him!

Hmm I'm not sure, if he eats too much, surely he'd get sick a bit after every feed, and not just one? If he is happy after, I'd ignore it. I'm sure it'll level out soon.

my DS is now 8 mths. i bf excl for 6 mths and still bf as well as weaning. we have had the most enormous vomiting problems, regualrly bringing back whole feeds, sometimes during da, soemtimes eves, esp in that exclv period. it really disturbed me for first few mths. BUT he was always fine, smiley even, as you say, afterwards and ready to feed again. after mths of it i think i learnt 1. i produce a lot of milk (and more in one breast than another), and 2. he is 'greedy' and will always take what's there. it seems it's too much, and/or doesn;t quite settle before it's up again. but althoug messy and disconcerting has def done no harm. he's a huge baby, has alwys put on weight. bf has still been a lovely experience (but we will be replacing all bedding etc once it's totally over!). if you're lilke us, he's just very refluxy. go with your instinct - if you feel fine and he seems fine/happy/himslef, you're prob ok. good luck x

Thaks for the reassurance wheeler and luxmum. It happened again tonight at the exact same time. Ds is a big baby too- on the 98th centile, the health visitor has said that he will feed a lot, and that I should expect him to put on a pound a week His 0-3 clothes are already a bit snug so its not like he's going hungry! I do wonder if I produce too much milk in the interval between his afternoon and evening feeds, but tbh it is the night time feeds when my boobs feel ready to explode, and he has never been sick then, even after taking both (very full!) sides. I guess it is just one of those things and hopefully he will grow out of it.

I'm impressed with your routine, littlelamb.
You posted almost exactly 24 hours after you started the thread.

Thanks for the advice Momma. I am beginning to wonder if it is something I am eating that is making him sick, as we eat about 2 hours before this happens. Are onions known to cause this in breastfed babies? It is the only thing I can think of that I have eaten on all three days. I might try cutting those out, but if that fails then I guess I will have to try the dairy free route Yesterday he developed some spots on his hands that look like little nettle stings, so maybe it is an allergic reaction to something? There is a babyclinic with the health visitors tomorrow so I might pop down there and see what they say.

doesn't sound like reflux or an allergy - some babies are just more whingy and vomity in the evenings.

if he's putting on weight and not uncomfortable at any of your other times, I wouldn't stress - it'll probably settle down.

is your burping routine different at this point in the day? ie are you putting him down to sleep straight away so doing it a bit faster/ less thoroughly?

in the evenings i used to have to stop my dc2 (fat pig boy) regularly and burp throughout the feed, as he was a total monster.

the only thing mine didn't like in breastmilk was thai chicken lol.

no-one should breastfeed without chocolate. it is a rule.

nb. dc1 vomited all day and night but continued to put on weight so no hv was remotely concerned.
