Breastfeeding newborn with shallow latch and lower lip tucking in

I’m breastfeeding my newborn but can’t seem to improve his latch. His lower lip tucks in and it’s almost like he’s unable to open his mouth wide enough to get a deep latch?

I think his lower jaw possibly doesn’t come out to meet his top? Has anyone experienced this?

Is he gaining weight? Is breastfeeding hurting you?

Yes, he’s gaining weight and no breastfeeding isn’t hurting.

I should have mentioned it my original post that he’s having some reflux though.

Just a note if you don't manage it - I had to use a nipple shield for the whole duration of breastfeeding (10months) as I couldn't improve the latch and to stop my nipples being torn to shreds! at least it worked, but it's a last resort.

that photo looks exactly like my youngest. It is possible but it will take some time for him to grow and learn to get a good latch.

Can you pull/ease his bottom lip out after he has latched on. I was told to do that after he had latched on if it was folded in. Might make it a bit better and more comfortable.
The not opening his mouth might be a separate problem caused by toungue tie, it was in our case. After it was cut he could open wider but it still took weeks for him to get used to it and build up his muscles for a good feed

If he is gaining weight and it is not hurting I would worry. He will improve as he gets bigger

Totally agree. If he's getting what he needs to put on weight and he's not hurting you, I wouldn't worry.
