Cmpa and EBF

Hi everyone!

My little boy is 5 months old tomorrow and we’re currently nearly three weeks into dairy free trial as he has suspected cmpa (although I’m not sure I’m convinced)
He is exclusively breast fed and I’d like to keep it that way if possible.

Hes dropped two centiles and we’ve been referred to dietician and allergy clinic. So I guess will have to see what they say but am aware it could take weeks to see anyone where we live

My question is what do you all eat for breakfast because toast is beginning to wear thin 😂
Im not big on normal milk let alone “plant milk” so that would be out for me. I do have scrambled egg/bacon etc but only at weekends when hubby can cook as mornings are a nightmare

A non food related question - do your cmpa babies always sound congested and like they have phlegm stuck in their throats?

Does anyone pump and bottle feed? I pumped some the other night and froze it. I went out with our older child yesterday and hubby said when the milk defrosted the fat layer was tiny and it didn’t remix very well so essentially the milk looked like cloudy water with yellow bits in it. It certainly looked like normal milk when it went into the freezer. Not had this before so is it the lack of fat from dairy causing it or something else? Baby seems fine

Thank you!

Well done, my GP was so useless we didn’t get referrals just a suggestion to ‘try in case it helps’. I now have two dairy free children, one older who is almost at the top of the milk ladder now and a younger one I am still bf but working on tailing off slowly.
This is a really good resource https://dilanandme.com/survival-guide-cmpa/
afraid I default to toast, oat milk pancakes for a treat at the weekend, or porridge can be good if you use water instead of milk? I found Overherd powedered oat milk a while ago which is great to make up in quantities for coffee or any recipe that calls for milk.

I rarely expressed but there is very little fat in human milk so you won’t have much to mix in I’m afraid.
the congestion should start to clear up after 4-8 weeks as the cows milk allergy symptoms subside. Mine had awful projectile vomiting and coughing that took weeks and weeks to clear up.

i have gone through two CMPA babies and found satisfactory replacements for everything apart from cheese which I couldn’t find an acceptable alternative for so I just got used to not having it. I like pizza without it if there’s enough interesting other toppings, an egg is a good one to give (sort of) coverage like cheese on top.

best of luck and well done for keeping going with it, I have been so pleased I persevered

The Ultimate Survival Guide For Breastfeeding With CMPA

I remember only too well how overwhelming it felt when I was faced with the prospect of cutting dairy from my diet. How incredibly scary it was seeing my son covered in hives after having his first direct reaction. The enormous weight of the extra resp...

i usually have Lidl’s Luxury Fruit & Nut Muesli with Almond Milk but if you’re not keen on milk how about egg on toast, mashed avocado on toast or making a batch of blueberry pancakes at the weekend and feeding them in batches? You’d need to use an alternative milk for them though.

Well done for going DF too. I found it a bit overwhelming at first but you do get used to reading every label.

Have you read this from Kellymom on dairy? I think it explains it very well Smile

I don’t think what you eat will be affecting your milk though. I can’t really help with the milk separating as I could barely ever express a drop Flowers

CMPA breastfed baby here too. Going totally dairy free is a huge adjustment. It took me a good 6-8 weeks to really get into my stride with cooking dairy free.

You need to get to grips with living dairy free as if they react to the very small amount of dairy in breastmilk, they will likely react very badly to dairy given directly when weaning. My son is 2 and can have baked milk and cooked cheese now, but only since about 18 months. Still cannot handle yogurt or cow's milk.

Careful of soy, my baby reacted to soy too, it was only when I went fully dairy AND soy free did all symptoms go away (and yes, sounded like phlegm too, on top of reflux).

Im on my 2nd allergy baby! Ive been dairy free since my youngest was 5 weeks.
Almost 2yo has CMPA, soya, pineapple, & barley allergies.
6m old (EBF) CMPA, soya & wheat. Its definitely way more limiting this time round!

Breakfast - crumpets, pain au chocolat (St Pierre ones are vegan and lovely!), sausages & beans, empire biscuits 😅

Both my boys havent had any issues with weight gain & so they havent had issues (that we know of) being on a full DF diet.

For oat milk, I use the Alpro Barista & i have to use flavoured syrup.

We mostly eat dairy/soya free as a family. My husband & teenager will sometimes add in their things such as cheese.

How are you both getting in now @FlutteryButtery2?

If you have an airfryer, I'm impressed how well they do bacon with minimal clean up. Otherwise coconut milk chia pudding overnight? Premade pancakes, possibly with vegan Nutella on? Flat bread and hummus?
