12-wk-old suddenly very upset while bfing

I haven't had any problems bfing DS (DC3) but suddenly since yesterday evening we've been really struggling. He starts as normal and then within seconds he gets very upset very suddenly. The sort of crying they do when something hurts and they're a bit shocked by it (like when they do the jabs). I thought he needed burping but I keep trying and either he doesn't burp at all or it doesn't improve after he does. He calms down very quickly if I give him a dummy but as soon as I put him back on the breast he gets very upset again until I finally give up. What can I do? He had a very green nappy today which I guess it means he's not feeding long enough to get to the creamy bit.

sore ears? does he cry on both sides?

i would take to the gp, if crying as tho hurt. just to get checked out.

Have you eaten or drunk anything different (first curry? first bottle of wine?) than usual? Change of taste can put them off and make them cross. Or started your period - that can have the same affect?

Or perhaps he has an upset stomach and feeding is making it hurt?

If he has had no problems before it sounds unlikely that reflux could have started quite so quickly?

Keep offering the breast and hopefuly he'll calm down.

slow let down?

Have you tried expressing some and feeding him that?

lackaDAISYcal · 20/06/2008 16:05

My DD did something similar at about 14 weeks and it turned out she had an ear infection and it was sore for her to lie down. It was worse on one side than the other.

vacaloca · 20/06/2008 16:05

If it was sore ears, wouldn't they hurt throughout the day/night rather than just when feeding? He seems happy enough the rest of the time. My GP is so useless when it comes to babies - his reply is that everything is normal with babies and they'll grow out of it.

I haven't eaten or drunk anything unusual and no sign of my period. I've been raking my brains wondering what it could be but can't come up with anything. I do change breasts and some times it helps and others it's exactly the same. I do get quite stressed when he's like this (especially as I have a toddler around wanting attention too) and I wonder whether he might notice this stress/tension.

sorry, x-post with the last two messages. I did wonder about slow let down too, but when he got really upset during the last feed I was spraying all over the place and he was still upset. It does feel as if he's having to work harder to get the milk flowing in the first place though. Maybe I'll try expressing.

He's not getting upset when lying down to sleep, but I have noticed that when feeding, he'll get upset as soon as I put him in that position even if I haven't started feeding yet. Hmm.

try feeding him lying down (both of you)?

StealthPolarBear · 20/06/2008 16:21

the expressing thing was just to see if that was the problem - wouldn't recommend it long term unless you have to

ear infection sounds likely - combination of lying on ear & sucking making pain worse?

i think lying on their side to feed causes problems as the pressure from inside the ear builds up and is painful. I don't think it's the same sort of pressure as lying on their back to sleep...or it's not as bad.

can you see your HV or doctor to get him checked over or is their a BFC you can see locally.

some information on kellymom that might help

bealcain · 20/06/2008 16:34

teething?

vacaloca · 20/06/2008 17:30

Right, well after all that, he's just had a fab feed . I did notice that if I talked loudly (calling the other kids) while feeding he'd start crying - maybe my voice is scary! Although the same was happening last night and I wasn't doing any talking then. Hopefully it'll get better now but if I struggle again this evening I'll have him checked by the GP. Why is it that they always seem to need a visit to the doctor's on Friday evening?! Thanks everyone for your help - I'll keep observing in case it's an ear infection. I really hope he's not teething - the other two didn't until 10 months old.

he might have got a fright from someone shouting when he was feeding and it's scared him a bit?

Glad thing seem a bit better for you tonight though and that it was just a passing phase. It can happen when they are going through a growth spurt/fussy stage as it says on kellymom.
