Interesting article. The author's mother sounds great.

Also sad to read that Belgium has the worst rate of bfing in the developed world - presumably something to do with very limited maternity leave - something like 15 weeks in total.

D'you like my contributions (I'm gabydolores, MsMinchin and Sidibongo!)?

That's a great article but makes me feel kind of sad that so many babies don't get BF and suffer for it.

"90 per cent of mothers who stopped feeding at six weeks said they wanted to carry on, while 40 per cent of those who stopped at six months felt the same. "
One in the eye to all the journalists who start the "BF mafia making ff mothers feel guilty" articles. We should, bf or ff, all be on the same side - the side of complete, accurate, understandable information and as much support as is required to breastfeed (whether that's none, or a lot).

"If British babies were breastfed at Norwegian rates for just three months, the NHS would save £50m annually in the treatment of one disease alone ? gastroenteritis."
Where's he getting these figures from?

sabire · 20/06/2008 09:07

The one on the percentage of mums who want to continue comes from research done either by the NCT or Unicef - can't remember which.

The other figure comes from Ball and Wright's 1999 research which was published in Paediatrics.

Thanks.
In that case - wow to the 2nd one!
I think the NHS is starting to do more to promote bf but I wonder whether enough is being done re training and putting support in place. Also they do promote it up to 6 months but don't really mention bf after that which I think goes some way to explaining the common belief that it isn't any benefit after 6 months.
