Bear with me, it's been a while, but when you are expressing...

is my pump working ok if my nipple (and surrounding area) is being 'sucked'? It's just that I've been pumping for quite a while and haven't had a drop.

I remember it being a bit of a trial with DD1 but I usually started to get something by now. DD2 is 3m and I thought I might build up a stash of milk in the freezer for emergencies/going out (if she'll take a bottle, that is!)

Thanks!

When this happened to me I would drink a pint of water & have something to eat, go back to it in half an hour. Hope this helps.

Racers · 18/06/2008 10:22

Good idea. I'll do that (any excuse to eat), do something else, and try again when DD2 next sleeps.

sounds fine
close your eyes and focus on your baby - that may help

popsycal · 18/06/2008 10:23

or try whille feeding

kalie · 18/06/2008 10:25

I used to eat lots of toast! Worked without fail.

Racers · 18/06/2008 10:25

Ah yes I remember doing that (juggling act) before, thanks.

Fruity toast? yum!

Yes, closing eyes & thinking of baby helped too. Also waiting until they're asleep & sitting beside them to express.

jelliebelly · 18/06/2008 10:29

Try putting a warm flannel on your breast to stimulate flow - that used to work for me - I often used to get out of the shower with leaky nipples for the same reason!

popsycal · 18/06/2008 10:36

ooooh you need the 'boobo jiggle' aswell - have to rush out now but will find a link when i get back

VictorianSqualor · 18/06/2008 10:37

Doing it in the morning, I can't get anything in the evening, but I get a good few ounces in the morning.

Racers · 18/06/2008 10:39

Ok, I think flannel and pump when feeding is next thing. Should have tried earlier this morning I think. If no luck later, maybe will try early tomorrow. Am off to google boobo jiggle... sounds like fun actually...

OP posts:
VictorianSqualor · 18/06/2008 10:41

Do not google boobo juiggle.
The results aren't to do with breastfeeding!

Racers · 18/06/2008 10:41

Um not sure whether to click on the links that search found!

Will await the safety of popsycal's link I think!

x-posted - don't worry, I ignored the results

My tips are relax, look at pictures of your baby and use warm flannels. And keep at it, apparently it's a skill that can be learned

VictorianSqualor · 18/06/2008 12:09

Try expressing as you feed on the other breast. I did it just after I posted on here and got 3.5oz within minutes because baby stimulated my letdown it was REALLY fast.

Racers · 18/06/2008 12:28

Thanks, just tried that as she fed (guzzling it down - clever girl!) and got a few drops but that's it. Will leave it for another day I think!

lol
sorry
it is a technique to get yourself ready for hand expressing and i meant to type boob jiggle - but dont google that either - it is my made up name

will find it

popsycal · 18/06/2008 12:51

here

look at section 'assisting the milk ejection reflex'

Racers · 18/06/2008 12:55

many thanks - now it's my turn to have to go out but I will have a good look at that link later and try it tonight/in the morning.

The think is I've had a very strong let down in the first few months - painfully so at times. It's like you say though, needs to be conjured up... Maybe I was too distracted on MN!

Breast compression also works....and I know this sounds a bit obvious but it can make a difference....make sure your nipple is dead centre. I sometimes found that it could end up a bit squwhiff (no idea how to spell that but hopefully you know what I mean!)
Try not to pump too long on one side either, if you're not getting anything as you'll only get disheartened which (I found) could then interfere with the letdown reflex.
Good luck!
