Weaning 6.5month old, no interest!

Ive been offering the fruit and veg that has been suggested to start with for the last 3 weeks and he’s showing no interest and spitting everything out.

I’ve given him purees and very soft sticks of veg but he doesn’t even try to suck them.

Is it best to keep trying or to wait a couple of weeks? I don’t want to put him off.

Just for context- he’s my second DC, the other one was always interested, even if not keen on the food itself.

Thanks!

Its been a while since I weaned my son but I found it easier to wean just before his normal milk feeding time so he would be hungry but not cranky. Also try letting them sit with you while you have your family meal, see if that makes them more interested

Sit him in the high chair with you at meal times and let him play with some soft food. The first few months of weaning are about learning and exploring tastes and textures. There’s no rush to get him eating three meals a day. Don’t withhold milk feeds before solids to ‘make him hungry’, in fact the advice is to just offer soft foods at your regular meal times and breastfeed on demand as normal. Some babies can’t wait to shove everything in their mouths, some are uninterested don’t get into solids until closer to 12 months. As long as he’s happy and a good weight, don’t worry.

Thanks!
I had been wondering if it could just be that he’s not really seen us eat.
I tend to eat when he sleeps because it’s just easier but I didn’t think about the consequences of that!

It could well be that. If he’s not seen you all eating then he has nothing to copy, if you all
sit and eat together it will probably make him more interested. Obviously he’ll probably want what ever you have on your plate, even if it’s the same as his!

Definitely start eating together. At 6.6”5 months he only needs to be offered solids once or twice a day so maybe breakfast and lunch?

Could you start giving him some more interesting finger foods now like a bit of grated cheese or some omelette cut into strips?

PickledElectricity · 14/03/2026 08:04

I had the exact same situation! My first was also a human trashcan who ate anything you put in front of him and my second wasn't interested. He only started properly trying when he was 8 months old. He's 10 months now and eating decently.

I think he’s starting to realise that this eating thing is going to be a regular occurrence and is starting to taste things rather than spitting it right out in disgust!

we have started eating with him and he seems to be interested in watching us-particularly his sister.

Seems to be going in the right direction!

That’s great! He’ll get the hang of it.

That’s great news @Meje. Babies do love learning by watching don’t they? Smile
